Full job description

ABOUT US

Thorpe Industries is a proud Saskatchewan-founded company and one of Western Canada’s leading building envelope contractors. We specialize in commercial, institutional, and industrial construction projects, with expertise in membrane roofing, architectural sheet metal, metal wall cladding, and other exterior building envelope systems. Our team takes pride in building strong relationships, delivering quality craftsmanship, and getting the job done right the first time. As we continue to grow, we are looking for talented people to join our team.

THE ROLE

The Estimator – Roofing & Cladding is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and well-documented cost estimates and bid proposals for commercial, institutional, and industrial roofing and cladding projects. This role involves reviewing drawings and specifications, completing material and labour takeoffs, obtaining supplier and subcontractor pricing, and evaluating project requirements to develop competitive bids.

Working closely with internal teams, clients, consultants, and suppliers, the Estimator plays a key role in the pre-construction process by identifying project risks, assessing constructability, and ensuring estimates reflect the scope, materials, labour, equipment, and other costs required to deliver successful projects.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Review architectural drawings, specifications, tender documents, and addenda to determine project scope and estimating requirements for roofing and cladding systems.
  • Complete accurate quantity takeoffs and site measurements for commercial roofing, membrane systems, architectural sheet metal, and metal wall cladding assemblies.
  • Attend on-site pre-bid meetings and conduct site visits to assess existing conditions, access requirements, project constraints, and installation considerations.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates covering materials, labour, equipment, subcontractors, and other project-related expenses.
  • Request, review, and compare pricing from suppliers, manufacturers, and subcontractors to ensure competitive and accurate bids.
  • Evaluate roofing and cladding specifications, system details, and applicable industry standards to identify scope gaps, discrepancies, and potential risks.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities, alternative materials, and value-engineering solutions while maintaining project quality and performance requirements.
  • Prepare clear, complete, and professionally documented quotations, tender submissions, and bid proposals within established deadlines.
  • Coordinate with project management, operations, and other internal stakeholders to support accurate pricing, project handoffs, and successful execution.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, general contractors, consultants, suppliers, and industry partners.
  • Stay current with roofing and cladding products, installation methods, industry standards, market pricing, and emerging building envelope technologies.
  • Participate in relevant industry functions, training, and professional development opportunities.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • 3+ years of estimating experience in the industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) construction sector, preferably in commercial roofing and/or cladding.
  • Strong understanding of commercial flat roofing systems, including membrane roofing assemblies, insulation, vapour barriers, and associated roof components.
  • Knowledge of architectural sheet metal, metal wall cladding, exterior envelope assemblies, and related installation details is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with applicable building codes, industry standards, and roofing and cladding requirements, including RCABC standards where applicable.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, tender documents, and technical details.
  • Experience completing material takeoffs, calculating quantities, and developing detailed construction cost estimates.
  • Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple bids and competing deadlines.
  • A self-starter mentality, with the initiative to work independently, solve problems, and take ownership of assigned estimates.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and a willingness to learn and use estimating software and digital construction tools.
  • Valid driver's licence and the ability to attend project sites as required.

COMPETENCIES

  • Technical comprehension: Understands roofing and cladding assemblies, construction drawings, specifications, and installation details to accurately assess project requirements.
  • Estimating accuracy: Produces detailed quantity takeoffs and reliable cost estimates for materials, labour, equipment, and subcontracted work.
  • Analytical thinking: Evaluates project scope, site conditions, constructability, and commercial risks to support informed pricing decisions.
  • Attention to detail: Identifies discrepancies, missing information, scope gaps, and potential cost exposures before bids are submitted.
  • Time management: Prioritizes multiple tenders and delivers complete, competitive estimates within strict bid deadlines.
  • Collaboration: Works effectively with suppliers, general contractors, consultants, project managers, and operations teams throughout the pre-construction process.
  • Initiative and accountability: Takes ownership of estimates, proactively seeks clarification, and ensures submissions are accurate, complete, and well-supported.
  • Continuous improvement: Stays informed on roofing and cladding technologies, material pricing, industry practices, and opportunities to improve estimating processes.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications.
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Pension plan.
  • Opportunity to play a key role in the growth of a leading building envelope contractor.
  • Collaborative team environment with opportunities for professional development.
  • Exposure to a diverse range of commercial, institutional, and industrial roofing and cladding projects.
