Structural Steel Designer/ Modeler

Location: On-Site | Waterloo, ON

Position Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Structural Designer / Tekla Modeler to join our growing team. This role focuses on developing accurate 3D models and detailed drawings for structural steel projects using Tekla Structures.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in structural modeling and detailing, thrives in a collaborative environment, and is passionate about producing precise, constructible designs.

Responsibilities:

· Develop and maintain detailed 3D structural steel models using Tekla Structures.

· Produce shop drawings, erection drawings, and GA drawings directly from 3D models.

· Interpret architectural, structural, and contract drawings to ensure accurate model development.

· Coordinate models with internal teams, engineers, and external stakeholders to resolve clashes and design issues.

· Generate material take-offs, bills of materials, and CNC/NC files.

· Update models and drawings based on project revisions, RFIs, and site feedback.

· Collaborate with Project Managers, Engineers, shop and field personnel to ensure constructability and efficiency.

· Participate in project coordination meetings and support issue resolution.

· Maintain organized project documentation and adhere to company modeling standards.

· Assist in improving workflows, modeling process, and detailing standards within the team.

· Manage multiple projects and priorities while maintaining drawing quality and project deadlines

Requirements:

· Post-secondary diploma or degree in Structural Engineering Technology, Drafting, or a related field.

· 3–6+ years of experience in structural steel modeling or detailing.

· Strong proficiency in Tekla Structures (required).

· Solid understanding of structural steel fabrication and erection practices.

· Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings.

· Knowledge of connection detailing, welding symbols, and industry standards.

· Experience with clash detection and model coordination is an asset.

· Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, while managing multiple projects.

· Strong organizational and time management skills.

· Strong ability to work independently, manage priorities, and maintain productivity and communication.

· Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate with other engineers/project managers.

· Experience developing or improving Tekla standards, templates, BOM’s etc.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with BIM workflows is an asset.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Experience assisting other modelers/detailers within a Tekla environment.

· Experience working in a fabrication driven environment

· Experience creating and modifying Tekla custom components, templates, reports, or automation tools.
