Availability: Must be available for any shift which can be anywhere from 6:30am-10pm, 7 days a week. Schedule is currently for 2-10pm but this may change due to operational needs.

Job Summary

The Shop Assistant is a unionized position that reports to the Maintenance Team Leader. This role provides support to mechanics and contributes to the smooth daily operations of the Maintenance Department by assisting with vehicle servicing, inventory control, shop upkeep, and parts procurement. Success in this position requires strong teamwork to collaborate effectively with mechanics and colleagues, flexibility and adaptability to manage a wide range of tasks as assigned, and consistent attention to detail to ensure vehicle safety and shop efficiency.

Responsibilities

Vehicle Support

  • Restock vehicles with supplies, including wipes, gloves, and First Aid kits.
  • Stamp all emergency equipment in vehicles monthly.
  • Assist mechanics with lubrication, oil changes, and tire changes.

Shop & Inventory Management

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized mechanical shop free of obstructions.
  • Keep the parts room stocked, organized, and updated with accurate inventory.
  • Research required parts, prepare purchase orders, and liaise with suppliers.
  • Enter data into OPS to support accurate records and reporting.

General Support

  • Work collaboratively with mechanics and the Maintenance Team Leader to complete assigned tasks, demonstrating strong teamwork.
  • Show flexibility and adaptability by assisting with varied shop and maintenance duties as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, including health and safety procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a mechanic’s shop.
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy in shop and vehicle tasks.
  • Demonstrated teamwork skills to collaborate with staff in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven flexibility and adaptability to handle changing priorities and diverse tasks.
  • Excellent computer skills, with experience using OPS or similar systems.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to bend, stretch, kneel, and squat to perform repairs and inspections.
  • Physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • WHMIS training required.
  • Must supply and maintain an adequate set of personal hand tools.
  • Valid Class “G” driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.
