Full job description

ABOUT LABSCUBED

LabsCubed designs and manufactures automated tensile testing equipment for the rubber and plastics industry. Our products, the CubeOne and CubeTen, are deployed in quality labs across North America, with goals to expand into Europe and Asia. We are a small, fast-moving hardware company with a global footprint, and we are growing the team to take on an ambitious pipeline of new hardware programs.

──────────────────────────────────────────

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is primarily a new product development role. You will own the full hardware development cycle, from first sketch to working prototype, across a mix of automated testing equipment, industrial automation, and robotics projects. You will collaborate closely with internal engineers and external partners including contract manufacturers, machine shops, and university research groups.

This is a hands-on role that demands both strong individual execution and the communication discipline to coordinate effectively across teams and partners. Knowing when to build and when to align is as important as the technical work itself.

──────────────────────────────────────────

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Lead mechanical design and prototype builds for new automated equipment, from concept and CAD through fabrication, assembly, and validation
  • Integrate embedded systems and firmware into hardware platforms, bridging mechanical and electrical design into cohesive, working systems
  • Write Python scripts and tooling to support hardware testing, data collection, and prototype iteration
  • Work with external partners such as contract manufacturers, machine shops, and research collaborators to move prototypes forward quickly and cost-effectively
  • Contribute to improvements on existing CubeOne and CubeTen platforms (DFM, reliability, ease of assembly) as opportunities arise
  • Document designs thoroughly: BOMs, drawings, test reports, and build notes

──────────────────────────────────────────

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • 5+ years of hands-on mechatronics experience in industry with a portfolio of real hardware you have designed, built, and shipped
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals: tolerance stacking, materials selection, DFM, and hands-on fabrication experience
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable parametric CAD for complex assemblies
  • Experience with embedded systems and firmware: MCU selection, sensor integration, motor control, and serial/industrial communication protocols
  • Solid Python skills for test automation, data processing, or hardware interfacing; general programming comfort is expected
  • Strong communicator who can gather requirements, align stakeholders, and translate engineering intent clearly across disciplines and partners
  • Self-directed and accountable — able to own a workstream from planning through delivery with minimal hand-holding, while keeping the right people informed at the right time

──────────────────────────────────────────

NICE TO HAVE

  • Background in industrial automation, robotics, or precision instrumentation
  • Experience with force/load measurement systems, materials testing, or lab automation
  • Familiarity with CE or UL certification processes for capital equipment
  • PCB schematic review and basic electronics design experience
