Full job description

About ModernAdvisor
At ModernAdvisor, we believe investment management should be built on trust, objectivity, and fairness.

As a discretionary portfolio manager, we help clients reach their long-term financial goals through disciplined investment management and personalized advice. Our team is committed to delivering an exceptional client experience while maintaining the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and fiduciary responsibility.

As demand for personalized advice continues to grow, we are expanding our Personal Portfolio Manager business, a service model designed to provide clients with direct access to professional portfolio management, ongoing investment guidance, and a dedicated relationship with an experienced investment professional.

Our culture is guided by three core values:

  • Trust – We build lasting relationships through transparency, accountability, and consistently acting in our clients' best interests.
  • Objective Advice – We provide evidence-based investment guidance free from product bias, ensuring recommendations are aligned with each client's unique goals and circumstances.
  • Fairness – We treat clients and colleagues with respect, honesty, and professionalism, fostering an environment where collaboration and diverse perspectives are valued.

The Role
ModernAdvisor is seeking a Portfolio Manager (Advising Representative) to support the continued growth of our Personal Portfolio Manager business line.

In this role, you will serve as the primary investment professional for a portfolio of clients, providing ongoing portfolio management, annual KYC reviews, and proactive investment management guidance. You will be responsible for developing trusted client relationships and delivering a high-quality experience that combines professional investment management with personalized advice.

This is a client-facing position that requires both strong technical investment expertise and a genuine passion for helping clients achieve their long-term financial goals. The successful candidate will be registered, or qualified for registration, as an Advising Representative of a Portfolio Manager and will play a key role in supporting ModernAdvisor's fast-growing Personal Portfolio Manager business segment.

ModernAdvisor's investment philosophy is centered on evidence-based investing, broad diversification, and cost efficiency. The successful candidate will be comfortable managing portfolios primarily through ETFs and other low-cost investment solutions, helping clients achieve their goals through disciplined portfolio construction rather than market timing or individual security selection.

What You'll Do

  • Manage discretionary investment portfolios in accordance with client mandates, firm policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct annual and ongoing Know Your Client (KYC) reviews to ensure client objectives, financial circumstances, investment knowledge, and risk tolerance remain current.
  • Lead client review meetings and portfolio discussions by phone or virtual meetings.
  • Communicate investment strategy, portfolio positioning, and market insights in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Monitor portfolio suitability and recommend adjustments when client circumstances or market conditions warrant.
  • Build long-term relationships through proactive communication and exceptional client service.
  • Collaborate with internal teams across investment management, operations, compliance, and client success.
  • Maintain accurate client records and documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Support compliance initiatives and contribute to the firm's strong culture of risk management and fiduciary oversight.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance the overall client experience and contribute to the continued growth of the firm.

Qualifications

  • Currently registered, or fully qualified and eligible for registration, as an Advising Representative of a Portfolio Manager with a Canadian Provincial Securities Commission.
  • CFA or CIM Charterholder
  • Meets the proficiency requirements under National Instrument 31-103 for Advising Representatives.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in portfolio management, investment advisory, wealth management, or a related financial services role.
  • Strong knowledge of portfolio construction, asset allocation, investment products, and capital markets.
  • Experience conducting KYC reviews, suitability assessments, and client portfolio reviews.
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethical conduct and acting in clients' best interests.

What Success Looks Like

The successful candidate will be someone who:

  • Earns and maintains client trust through professional expertise and sound judgment.
  • Combines technical investment knowledge with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Takes ownership of client relationships and follows through on commitments.
  • Values collaboration, continuous learning, and personal accountability.
  • Thrives in a client-first, fiduciary-focused environment.

Why ModernAdvisor

At ModernAdvisor, you'll join a team that believes great advice starts with doing what's right for clients. We offer the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals in a collaborative environment where integrity, innovation, and continuous improvement are valued.

If you're seeking a role where you can make a meaningful impact on clients' financial lives while building your career with a growing portfolio management firm, we'd love to hear from you.
