THE AQUATARIUM
Job Opportunity
App Content Creator
Part-Time, Contract | Reports to Executive Director | Brockville, Ontario
Compensation commensurate with experience | Position contingent on confirmed funding
YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE PEOPLE OBSESSED WITH AN APP.
Not a game app. Not a streaming app. A visitor app for a science attraction full of live otters, river ecosystems, incredible animal habitats, and decades of Great Lakes conservation science.
Your job is to make that app the thing visitors open before they get through the front door, and the thing they are still watching on the couch three days later.
The Aquatarium is a registered Canadian charity and licensed zoo at the gateway to the Thousand Islands UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. We welcome over 60,000 visitors a year and we are building an app experience that extends the science, deepens the story, and makes people want to come back. We need someone who can fill that app with content so good it feels impossible that it came from a place in Brockville.
That is where you come in.
WHAT YOU WILL ACTUALLY DO
You will create, manage, and publish content directly inside our visitor app. You own the content layer end to end, from concept to live. You will move through our exhibits with a camera and a head full of ideas, and you will make things that make people stop and watch, tap, play, and learn.
That includes:
- Short-form educational videos and reels tied to specific exhibits, the kind visitors watch once and then send to someone
- In-app games and interactive experiences that extend what visitors see in front of them into something they can play
- Photo and video content that captures the real energy of the space, the animals, the science, the weird and wonderful
- AI-generated and AI-assisted content, you know the tools and you use them unapologetically to make more, faster, and weirder
- Scavenger hunts, trading card reveals, photo frame moments, and gamified experiences that reward curiosity
- Content calendars, publish schedules, and in-app content management so everything is live, fresh, and organized
- Pitching new content ideas constantly, executing the good ones, and learning fast from the ones that miss
WHO YOU ARE
You already make things. You do not need to be asked twice. You see an interesting animal or a great piece of science and you immediately think about how to make it land on a screen in a way that hooks someone in the first two seconds.
You are:
- Genuinely fluent in AI content tools, not dabbling, actually using them in your workflow right now
- A natural at short-form video: concept, script, shoot, edit, and that instinct for what makes someone watch to the end
- Experienced with app content management or digital content publishing of some kind
- Able to make science feel electric to someone who walked in thinking they do not care about science
- A game thinker, someone who sees a habitat and wonders what the mechanic could be
- Organized enough to manage a live content calendar but loose enough to drop everything when something incredible happens in an exhibit
- A self-starter who reports in, not up, meaning you own your lane and keep your director informed without needing to be managed
- Someone who is genuinely excited about freshwater ecosystems, or at least willing to become that person
SHOW US YOUR WORK
A resume without a portfolio will not be read. Full stop.
We want links to things you have actually made. Short-form videos, games, interactive content, educational pieces, anything that lives somewhere we can watch or play it. Show us how you used AI to make it. Show us something that worked and something that did not. We want to understand how you think, not just what performed.
Bonus points if you make something for this application specifically. Seriously.
THE HONEST PART
This role starts as a contract position, and here is the honest version of what that means: we are building something. The app content you create is not filler. It is a core part of how we demonstrate impact to funders, grow our visitor experience, and make the case that The Aquatarium deserves to operate at a bigger scale. You are not coming in to maintain what exists. You are coming in to help prove what is possible.
What that looks like in practice: genuine creative latitude, direct access to decision-makers, a mandate to make things that actually matter, and a workplace where a beaver might waddle past your desk setup. The content you make will be seen by tens of thousands of visitors who are already excited. Make it great and it becomes the proof point that opens the next door.
Do that, and this role grows with the funding it helps unlock.
