Recreation- Therapeutic Recreationist
Parkview Meadows Christian Retirement Village - Townsend, ON
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Program Services Manager, the Therapeutic Regreationist is responsible to develop and implement in the planning, organizing and coordinating of programs compatible with the residents’ interests and abilities. Motivate and involve residents in meeting their mental, physical and emotional needs. individual and group programs for the purpose of activating and rehabilitating residents with various disabilities to communicate and attain their physical, mental and social potential. These responsibilities shall be carried out in accordance with corporate mission and vision statement, policies and procedures, and applicable legislation and regulations and shall be consistent with the residents’ strengths, needs and preferences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- plan, organize and coordinate programs compatible with the residents’ interests and abilities;
- assist in carrying out all modules of restorative care in a planned orderly manner, including ADLs;
- maintain good record keeping of day to day programs and completion of resident assessments and quarterly reviews;
- assist in recruiting and orientation of volunteers;
- Plan group activities based on resident’s interests and levels of capability to promote interaction, group identity, feelings of usefulness and self esteem;
- take part in In-Service education as directed;
- assist supervision for effective communication of programs to the residents;
- interact with other disciplines in a team effort to achieve objectives of the Therapuetic Recreationist /Activity Programs;
- assist in restorative care programs as to residents’ ADLs, including assistance in the dining room at meal service;
- participate in the multi-disciplinary Resident Care Plan meetings to discuss resident response to programs, new admissions, special problems, new goals with other members of the multi-discipline team members;
- drawing up a monthly schedule after program planning discussions with the Program Services Manager;
- adhere to all policies and procedures pertaining to the operation of the facility in regard to: infection control; health and safety; personnel practices; internal and external emergencies; residents’ rights; confidentiality;
- work in a safe manner by: promptly reporting accidents/illness; seeking out first aid when appropriate; cooperating in health care treatment; cooperating in all aspects of the facility’s modified work program; reporting all unsafe or unhealthy conditions;
- participate in staff meetings, committees and in-service education designated by the Program Services Manager;
- interact tactfully and courteously with residents, residents’ family, visitors and fellow staff;
- perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications Required:
- Diploma in activation, recreational leadership or leisure studies from a recognized community college or university;
- Long Term Care experience
- possess a Community College certificate in Working with the Aged;
- able to work independently, exercise judgement, initiative, and leadership;
- possess excellent inter-personal skills
- read, write and understand to follow/carry out instructions in English independently;
