The Opportunity: Executive Director of Dam Safety & Chief Dam Safety Engineer

Permanent, Full-Time position, based out of Whitehorse, Yukon.

Are you a Chief Dam Safety Engineer, Engineer of Record, or senior dam engineering professional looking for the opportunity to lead an owner's dam safety program?

Join Yukon Energy as the organization's senior technical authority for dam safety. In this role, you will provide independent engineering oversight, guide regulatory and dam safety strategies, advise executive leadership and the Board of Directors, and help ensure the safe stewardship of hydroelectric infrastructure that powers communities across the Yukon.

What will you do: As Yukon Energy's Executive Director, Dam Safety & Chief Dam Safety Engineer, you will:

  • Serve as Yukon Energy's senior technical authority for dam safety, providing independent engineering oversight and risk-informed advice to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Lead Yukon Energy's Dam Safety Program and Dam Safety Management System, ensuring alignment with Canadian Dam Association guidelines, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Oversee dam safety reviews, risk assessments, surveillance programs, emergency preparedness, and technical assurance activities supporting the safe operation of hydroelectric assets.
  • Represent Yukon Energy before regulators, governments, Yukon First Nations, review boards, and technical panels on dam engineering and dam safety matters.
  • Guide long-term dam safety strategy, asset management planning, rehabilitation programs, and capital investments that support the safe stewardship of critical hydroelectric infrastructure.

This position serves as Yukon Energy's senior technical authority for dam safety. We are seeking an experienced dam engineering professional with significant expertise in dam engineering, dam safety, hydroelectric infrastructure, or water-retaining structures. Applicants without direct dam engineering or dam safety experience are unlikely to meet the requirements of this role.

What you need to succeed:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, with eligibility for P.Eng. registration in Yukon.
  • Minimum 15 years of engineering experience, including significant experience in dam engineering, dam safety, hydroelectric infrastructure, or water-retaining structures.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a Dam Safety Program, Dam Safety Management System, or equivalent dam safety portfolio.
  • Strong knowledge of dam safety governance, risk assessment, inspections, monitoring programs, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Extensive knowledge of Canadian Dam Association (CDA) guidelines and industry best practices.
  • Experience providing technical advice and recommendations to executive leadership, boards of directors, regulators, and external stakeholders.

Assets:

  • Master’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Structural, Hydraulic, or related Engineering.
  • Experience as a Chief Dam Safety Engineer, Engineer of Record, Responsible Officer, Independent Review Board member, or similar senior dam safety leadership role.
  • Experience within a hydroelectric utility, dam owner, or owner-operator environment.
