Litigation Law Clerk
About Powell Litigation
Powell Litigation is a boutique civil litigation firm founded by Weston Powell, dedicated exclusively to advocating for individuals and small to medium-sized businesses across Toronto and Southern Ontario. We take on the disputes that matter most to our clients — from commercial and contractual conflicts to small claims, debt collection, employment, and estate litigation — and we resolve them with clear communication, cost-efficient strategy, and courtroom-ready preparation.
We've been voted Best Law Firm by the Toronto Star Readers' Choice Awards, hold an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and are backed by hundreds of five-star client reviews. Our approach is simple: straightforward communication, proactive planning, and aggressive advocacy when it counts.
The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Litigation Law Clerk to support our lawyers across a busy civil litigation practice, with a particular focus on Collections and Mortgage Enforcement matters. This is a hands-on role for a detail-oriented clerk who can manage files independently, from drafting and issuing pleadings through to enforcement, while also supporting the broader team with discovery, trial preparation, and day-to-day file management.
This is an in-person position based at our downtown Toronto office, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We work closely as a team, and this role requires being on-site to collaborate directly with counsel and staff.
Key Responsibilities
● Work with lawyers and clerks to prepare court pleadings and proceedings, including drafting pleadings, affidavits, court applications, and bills of costs
● Issue and file court documents through the e-civil filing portal and Case Centre (Ontario)
● Prepare simple court documents, and assist with drafting and reviewing legal documents and correspondence
● Prepare and file Writs of Seizure and Sale, Writ Renewals, and garnishments
● Manage document identification and collection, review and summary, and preparation of lists of documents
● Manage court filing deadlines, bring-forwards, and coordination of court materials
● Open files, type, proofread, photocopy, scan, bind, and format correspondence and legal documents
● Issue and arrange for service of originating processes and other documents; file and prepare materials for storage
● Analyze and summarize complex information to support litigation strategy and matter management
● Support discovery and trial preparation, including coordinating and assisting with witness interviews
● Schedule meetings, court appearances, examinations, and mediations
● Prepare accounts
● Record and store client information in paper and electronic format
● Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, the court, and other professionals by telephone and email
● Remain familiar with, and willing to learn, new applications and technology as needed
● Assist with other law clerk duties as assigned
What You Bring
● Previous experience as a law clerk is a must
● A minimum of 5 years of experience in a Litigation Law Clerk role
● A Law Clerk/Paralegal Diploma or Degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent experience; Legal Assistant/Law Clerk certification required
● Strong knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure and general court procedure
● Strong working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Soluno
● Experience with e-Discovery tools, and with ACL or similar software used to create court documents, is an asset
● Experience using new technology, including AI tools, responsibly to support legal work
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills, supported by sound judgment and professionalism
● A detail-oriented, highly organized approach, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
● A collaborative, client-focused mindset and the ability to build positive working relationships with lawyers, colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders
