ELIGIBILITY FOR THIS COMPETITION IS RESTRICTED TO STEP 1 CANDIDATES INCLUDING OPS ALOC AND OCAA LAWYERS living or working within 125 km of this location. Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.

Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members.
Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.

About the job

Duties Will Include:

• Providing legal and strategic analysis and advice, information and related services (i.e. research, opinions, Attorney General Consents, Dangerous Offender Applications, Freedom Of Information requests, etc.) on matters affecting the region
• Ensuring effective case Management and Jordan timeline strategies are carried out in the region
• Preparing correspondence/briefing notes on behalf of the Regional Director/Deputy Director, Assistant Deputy Minister and Deputy Minister and Attorney General
• Responding to requests from the public
• Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with all members of the organization and other participants in the justice system to support regional, divisional and ministry goals and to support the administration of justice
• Prosecuting offences pursuant to the Criminal Code of Canada (CCC) and other statutes at all levels of Court, and specifically Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice, with or without a jury
• Performing case management duties to support the efficient prosecution of criminal matters, e.g. screening, disclosure, resolution meetings
• Providing legal support and advice to the Office of the Director of Crown Operations and various local Crown Offices in the North Region
• Ensuring timely and comprehensive responses are made to all substantive, procedural and policy requirements in the criminal litigation process
• Performing special justice-related projects and involvement in community programs as requested
• Keeping informed on office/regional/divisional/provincial initiatives, protocols and directives and implementing them to ensure consistent practices within the justice system, e.g. Bail Best Practices Protocol, Justice Modernization, Case Management Protocol, Domestic Violence Court Initiatives
• Travelling frequently to other court locations to prosecute and support the prosecution teams across the North Region (Dryden, Fort Frances, Gore Bay, Haileybury, Kapuskasing, Kenora, North Bay, Parry Sound, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Timmins)
• Assisting other counsels with prosecutions, research, etc.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

• You have membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
• Valid Ontario Class 'G' Driver's license

Knowledge and Skills

• Demonstrated knowledge, experience and expertise in conducting prosecutions, on behalf of the Attorney General, in the Ontario Court of Justice(Criminal, Youth Court, Provincial Offences Court, Bail Court , including Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) Court] and the Superior Court of Justice
• Experience in prosecutions of a serious and complex nature, at all levels of courts, including jury trials
• Knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, criminal law procedures, rules of evidence and case law
• Knowledge of the role and function of a prosecutor in the criminal justice system in Ontario
• Demonstrated experience, ability and interest to work on CLD projects and various initiatives
• Experience in case management duties to support the efficient prosecution of criminal matters (e.g. screening, disclosure and resolution meetings)
• Demonstrated attributes and experience in working in a self-directed environment
• Advanced skills and experience in conducting legal research and in drafting legal materials.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

• Demonstrated judgment and analytical ability to determine appropriate legal remedies
• Demonstrated exceptional, interpersonal, presentation and communication skills

Other Essential Skills

• Technical skills to work effectively with computer technology and databases are made available to professional staff
