Full job description

Wallace Smith LLP is a civil litigation boutique in downtown London, Ontario. We practice primarily in insurance defence, health law and plaintiff personal injury, acting for both institutional clients and individuals.

Our institutional clients include large insurers, as well as smaller special risks and mutual insurers. Our litigation practice includes auto tort and SABS claims, priority disputes, professional negligence, property damage, coverage issues, and other complex civil litigation.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for an Associate Lawyer with 4-7 years of relevant experience to join our team and work closely with senior counsel.

This is an opportunity to develop a litigation practice in a smaller, collegial environment where associates are given meaningful responsibility, mentoring, direct client contact and, importantly, the opportunity to learn from lawyers who enjoy practicing law.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Work closely with senior counsel on a wide variety of civil litigation matters;
  • Develop your written and oral advocacy skills, including pleadings, motions, discoveries, mediations and examinations;
  • Communicate directly with clients, insurers, experts, and opposing counsel;
  • Take increasing responsibility for your own files and matters;
  • Participate in mediations, motions, trials and other advocacy opportunities;
  • Participate in business development and client relationship building; and
  • Develop as a well-rounded advocate.

Who We're Looking For:

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Bright, curious and genuinely interested in the law;
  • A strong writer and communicator;
  • Well-organized and able to manage competing priorities;
  • Comfortable with technology and interested in finding better ways to work;
  • Someone who takes ownership of their work and wants to continue developing;
  • Professional, personable and comfortable dealing directly with clients; and
  • Interested in becoming an effective advocate, not simply someone who wants to process files.

Prior experience in insurance defence, personal injury, health law or other civil litigation is required.

What We Offer:

We believe lawyers develop best when they are given responsibility, support and access to experienced counsel.

We offer:

  • A genuinely collegial, smaller-firm environment;
  • Meaningful mentorship and hands-on learning;
  • Early and increasing opportunities for advocacy and client contact;
  • A modern, paperless and tech-forward practice;
  • A hybrid work environment;
  • A broad range of civil litigation experience; and
  • Competitive compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications.

If you are looking for a place where you can do good legal work, learn from experienced litigators and become a better lawyer we would like to hear from you.
