About us

Arbutus Home Building Centre is a family owned and operated small business on Gabriola Island, supplying building supplies and materials to homeowners and contractors on Gabriola and beyond. We typically employ between 10 and 20 employees between sales associates, yard workers, and truck drivers, resulting in a casual and sociable work environment.

Description:

A Sales Associate is responsible for providing prompt, courteous and efficient service to customers. Advise customers on appropriate merchandise and related items; processing transactions (cash, credit card, debit card, account) using retail software; ticketing and replenishing merchandise, cycle counting; general housekeeping of shelves and store, stocking shelves, and merchandising.

Responsibilities

- Operate all point-of-sale equipment, including the cash register, with sufficient speed and accuracy.

- Answer the phone promptly and take messages according to store policy.

- Assist customers in locating merchandising in store, on homehardware.com, as well as processing special

- Ensure customers are greeted when entering the store or your department.

- Determine customer’s needs by asking open-ended questions.

- Be familiar with items in stock and yard inventory, including product use and operation.

- Communicate product knowledge to the customer as appropriate.

- Assist customers in locating and comparing merchandise.

- Process special orders for non-stock or out of stock items.

- Assist customers with carrying out of large or heavy items.

- Follow procedures and maintain standards according to store policy

- Advise the designated manager of shortages, damaged goods, back-orders etc.

- Change prices on merchandise, bins, displays, etc. as necessary.

- Build special displays and signage for sales, promotions and other special events.

- Remove sales and promotional displays, prices etc. and rearrange stock following promotional events.

- Always take appropriate safety precautions when cutting pipe, glass, wire mesh, making keys etc., and make an effort to minimize waste.

- Keep stock in storage area neat, clean, and orderly.

- Participate in regular cycle counting, and assist in taking annual inventory counts.

- Reorder merchandise according to stores buying procedures.

- Attend meetings, training sessions, etc. as required.

- Work on special projects as assigned by supervisor.

- Work on additional duties and assignments as assigned by management.

- Work in a safe manner in accordance to provincial and federal safety legislation, as well as use of good common sense. Report any potential hazards and unsafe behavior to management in order to have the situation corrected.

Qualifications:

- Friendly and helpful attitude toward customers.

- Excellent communication skills.

- Willingness to learn.

- Sufficient mathematical skills.

- Prior retail experience beneficial.

- Willingness to continually develop professional skills and knowledge base.

- Ability to work co-operatively in a team atmosphere is a must.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $17.40-$19.00 per hour

Expected hours: 24 – 40 per week
