Full job description

Working as an integral part of the team, the Pharmacy Assistant works under the supervision and direction of a registered pharmacist. The primary role of the Pharmacy Assistant is to support the efficient functioning of the pharmacy and assist in dispensing medications. They perform a variety of tasks, including receiving and processing prescription orders, measuring and packaging medications, maintaining inventory, and providing customer service. They also handle administrative duties such as managing patient records, filing insurance claims, taking payments, and operating pharmacy software systems.

Responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in dispensing medications under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Receive and process prescription orders from customers.
  • Measure, count, and package medications accurately.
  • Prepare labels for medication containers.
  • Maintain inventory of medications and supplies.
  • Monitor stock levels and place orders for replenishment.
  • Check the expiration dates of medications and remove expired stock.
  • Provide excellent customer service, answering inquiries and assisting customers.
  • Handle cash transactions and operate the cash register.
  • Maintain patient records and update relevant information.
  • File insurance claims and handle paperwork related to prescriptions.
  • Assist with the compounding of medications, as needed.
  • Use and maintain pharmacy equipment and technology.
  • Adhere to pharmacy regulations, ethical standards, and patient confidentiality.

Required Qualifications:

  • Some High School, General Education Development, or equivalent.
  • Basic math and outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of a Pharmacy Assistant college program or several months of progressive experience in a pharmacy.
  • Training/experience are a benefit but not required
  • Ability to handle multiple demands, stay focused during repetitive tasks, and work under pressure.
  • Action-oriented with a demonstrated willingness to learn.
  • Interest in the pharmaceutical industry and commitment to continuous improvement through optimizing work processes.
  • Accountable for your work and can work in a safe, responsible manner with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to patients and coworkers to maximize accuracy in the delivery of patient care.
  • Friendly and engaging personality. High levels of patience and tact to deal with patients or difficult situations.
  • Strong listening skills to receive and understand direction from supervisors and when interacting with patients.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and gladly willing to be involved in the community.
  • Current BC driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Ability to commit to actively upholding and consistently practicing personal diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness, as well as safety and sensitivity approaches in the workplace.

Nature and Scope:

The nature and scope of positions may include some or all the following:

  • Ability to lift 10 pounds and, at times, up to 30 pounds.
  • In an 8-hour workday: standing/walking 6-8 hours.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and overtime as required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Hand use: single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, and pulling.
  • Work requires the following motions: bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching.
  • Exposure to Health Canada-approved cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to use tools and equipment appropriate for a dispensary.

Before starting employment, a Criminal Record Check will be required. Should the results of such inquiries indicate there is a criminal record that is relevant to the position applied for, a review must take place with respect to the applicant's suitability for appointment.

The position will require the ability to successfully maintain valid certifications in assigned training such as and not limited to WHMIS.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00-$25.00 per hour
