Full job description

The Museum Assistant will be responsible for researching and handling the Community
Waterfront Heritage Centre's (CWHC) cultural assets under the guidance and supervision of the curator. They will work with the curator to create a new exhibition centred on the history of locally operated shipping companies in Owen Sound. The museum assistant will also research and record information about the cultural assets to improve research and exhibition-building capability.

Eligibility/Qualifications:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or have a refugee status in Canada
  • Be between 16 and 30 of age inclusively at the start of employment
  • Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number)
  • Be a high school, college, or university student
  • Be registered on the Young Canada Works online candidate inventory
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Weekend availability is an asset
  • The ideal candidate will be a post-secondary student studying history, museum studies, or a related field, or will be a high school student who intends to pursue a related field of study.

Responsibilities:

  • Researching and cataloguing artifacts and other historic objects in the museum’s collection
  • Assisting with managing the museum’s collection (handling, storage)
  • Assisting with researching and developing a new exhibit
  • Creating an inventory of the museum’s research and reference files.
  • Interpreting Museum exhibits and displays for visitors
  • Providing visitor services for museum patrons
  • Assisting with special events, programs, and fundraising activities
  • Other duties as required

Interviews will be conducted in-person at the museum. They will be led by the museum curator and nominated members of the board. All candidates will be given the same set of questions to ensure fairness in the hiring process.

Pay: $18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30.0 per week
