The Construction Association of Nova Scotia (CANS) is currently seeking an experienced and motivated Manager, Education & Training to lead the day-to-day operations of our education and training program.

CANS is an industry trade association representing the interests of contractors, suppliers, and service providers throughout Atlantic Canada and across the country. We represent 800 large and small companies that build, renovate, and restore non-residential buildings, roads, bridges, and other engineering projects.

As part of our dynamic team, you'll play a critical role in delivering competitive, relevant, and cost-effective educational programming that meets the evolving needs of the construction industry in Atlantic Canada.

About the Role

Reporting to the Director, Policy & Workforce Development, you will be responsible for overseeing the successful planning, delivery, and evaluation of CANS' Education & Training Development Program. You’ll manage a wide variety of professional development initiatives tailored to the construction industry, working collaboratively with internal teams, external partners, and CANS members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Budget Strategy & Management: Develop and maintain the annual program budget in alignment with organizational goals. Strategize to meet financial targets.
  • Business Development: Cultivate industry relationships to drive investment in the education program and lead private training initiatives aligned with organizational financial objectives.
  • Program Planning & Logistics: Plan, implement, and assess a continuing education schedule, ensuring delivery within budgeted goals.
  • Team Management: Lead a team to achieve departmental objectives by planning, coordinating, and evaluating program activities.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Responsible for developing and maintaining third party and stakeholder relationships.
  • Program Research: Identify relevant education programs based on industry trends and operational priorities.
  • Trainer Management: Source and manage contract trainers, including negotiating fees, scheduling, and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Event Support: Assist with setup and execution of education events, as needed.
  • Member Support: Respond to member inquiries about programs via email, phone, or in person.
  • Marketing Support: Assist in creating promotional content to support program visibility and success.
  • Training Partner Evaluation: Identify and monitor the performance of trainers and partners delivering programs to members.
  • Additional Duties: Perform various related organizational tasks as needed.

Collaboration & Relationships

  • Works collaboratively with other departments as required, including program partners, trainers, internal/external stakeholders as determined through ongoing program development.
  • Builds relationships with board and committee members, business representatives, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participates in committees and team meetings as required.

Decision-Making & Autonomy

  • Works within CANS policies, procedures, and strategic plan, but has latitude in making decisions on routine tasks; able to identify, consider, and manage the implications of any change process as it relates to the role, including the wider impact on CANS, in discussion and with approval of the Director, Policy & Workforce Development.
  • Consults with Director, Policy & Workforce Development on issues that are more complex and require upper-level approval or guidance.

Leadership & Initiative

  • Works independently with little supervision, on a daily operational basis.
  • Takes initiative to keep abreast of issues related to the construction industry.
  • Maintains a positive attitude focused on total organizational success.
  • Is aware of and works within all brand standards.
  • Consults with CANS Senior Management as necessary to ensure program integrity.
  • Identifies and brings forward opportunities for program expansion/cross program alliances and seeks appropriate approval before commencing new initiative.

Qualification & Skills

  • Post-secondary education with a concentration in business. Human resources or project management considered an asset.
  • Proven experience in program or project management.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing staff and teams.
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, and time-management abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general tech-savviness.
  • Ability to interpret complex information and conduct research.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a customer service mindset.
  • Basic knowledge of the general structure and organization of the non-residential construction industry.
  • Basic knowledge of local construction industry safety standards.
  • Basic knowledge of post-secondary training institutions, the educational system in Nova Scotia, curriculum development and career planning would be an asset.
  • Experience in the non-residential construction industry would be an asset.
  • Experience working with various stakeholders, including community groups, business representatives, educators and government agencies would be an asset.
