Are you a student looking to gain some retail experience this summer? The Arts Council of Ladysmith and District is hiring a summer student to join us as a Gallery Associate at our downtown Ladysmith gallery.

For 20 years, the ACLD has been enhancing the vitality of the artistic community and developing the arts through education, exhibitions, and engagement. We believe that art is for everyone and strive to develop the space and resources for an inclusive art experience for all. Who You Are

You’re friendly, enthusiastic, and love engaging with people. You have a passion for the arts and enjoy creating a welcoming environment for visitors. You're organized, dependable, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. Whether it’s helping someone discover a new artist or keeping the space looking its best, you’re ready to jump in and be a key part of the gallery experience this summer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Open and close the gallery each day.
  • Greet all visitors warmly and answer phone calls or direct inquiries as needed.
  • Provide accurate information about current exhibitions, artists, and artwork on display.
  • Assist visitors with purchasing artwork and items from the gallery store.
  • Maintain the gallery’s appearance by dusting, organizing displays, and monitoring for safety or security concerns.
  • Record daily visitor numbers and assist with administrative tasks such as event support, data entry, and manual updates.
  • Help with setup and takedown of exhibitions and monthly shows.
  • Support special projects including Arts on the Avenue and community initiatives.
  • Attend training sessions and represent the gallery in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Assist Gallery Manager with other projects as needed

Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills for interacting with the public.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Comfortable working with cash and operating a point-of-sale system.
  • Retail and customer service experience is an asset.
  • Background knowledge of the arts would be considered an asset.
  • Willingness to learn and follow gallery policies and procedures.
  • Clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector search (to be completed as part of the recruitment process)

Additional Qualifications

This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs grant. In ordered to be considered for this position you must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Act
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada

Please note that international students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Hours

This job is 30 hours per week. This is a limited time summer contract expected to run from June 16 to August 11, 2025.

Compensation

The rate of pay is $18 per hour. Wages are paid semi-monthly and include 4% in lieu of vacation pay on every pay cheque.
