Title: Class 1 Driver/Production Worker (Dual Role) Plant: St. John’s, Newfoundland
Department: Operations
Reports To: Production Supervisor/Shift Lead
Position Summary:
The Production Worker / Class 1 Driver supports recycling operations through a combination of material processing and transportation services. This dual role is responsible for safely and efficiently sorting recyclable materials within the facility while also operating a Class 1 tractor trailer to complete scheduled collection and delivery routes. Working both independently and as part of a team, the position contributes to production targets and overall operational efficiency while maintaining a strong commitment to safety.
Key Responsibilities:
Transportation & Logistics (Class 1 Driver) ~80%
- Safely operate a Class 1 tractor trailer with lift-gate in compliance with all highway regulations.
- Demonstrate a strong personal commitment to safety and proactively suggest improvements.
- Conduct thorough pre- and post-trip inspections.
- Complete daily trip reports and maintain accurate logbooks in Geotab.
- Load and unload materials using forklifts and lift-gate systems.
- Ensure proper handling and secure transport of recyclable materials.
- Complete scheduled pickup and delivery routes across assigned service areas.
- Provide flexible support to additional regions (including Corner Brook and Stephenville) as required.
- Deliver friendly and courteous customer service.
- Maintain vehicle cleanliness and good housekeeping standards.
- Work independently in varying weather conditions (hot and cold).
- Perform medium physical work (lifting up to 50 lbs).
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
Production Worker (Material Recovery Facility – MRF) ~20%
- Rotate through assigned sorting stations as required to support operational efficiency and team coverage.
- Monitor sorting lines for contamination, prohibited materials, and safety hazards, reporting concerns immediately.
- Empty bags of recyclable materials and separate contaminants from acceptable materials.
- Identify and remove non-conforming or hazardous materials from conveyors and follow site reporting procedures.
- Perform visual inspections of equipment and work areas; report deficiencies or concerns.
- Maintain a clean and organized workstation using a “clean as you go” approach.
- Operate basic tools and equipment such as brooms, rakes, and other tools as required.
- Work collaboratively with team members to meet production and quality targets.
Occupational Health & Safety Responsibilities:
Must wear required PPE at all times, including:
- Safety boots (CSA approved)
- Company approved high-visibility clothing
- Gloves
- Safety glasses
- Hearing protection (when required)
- Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Remain alert to surroundings, including moving equipment and vehicles within the facility.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Valid Class 1 driver’s license with air brake endorsement and a clean driver’s abstract; must pass background check.
- Strong customer service, conflict resolution, and troubleshooting skills with the ability to handle objections professionally.
- Safety-conscious mindset with a commitment to workplace health and safety practices.
- Forklift experience and/or certification is required.
- Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proven ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interact tactfully. diplomatically, and professionally with diverse individuals.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written) in English.
- Good hand-eye coordination and physical capability to perform medium work (up to 50 lbs).
- Flexible and adaptable with a strong work ethic and positive attitude.
- Professional appearance and conduct.
- First Aid certification and recycling depot experience are considered assets.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand or walk for extended periods (up to two and half hours (2.5) between breaks).
- Frequent bending, twisting, lifting, reaching, and manual handling of materials.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures and environmental conditions.
Working Conditions
Production Worker:
- Work is performed primarily in an industrial environment with exposure to moving mechanical parts, dust, odors, humidity, and varying temperatures.
- Regular exposure to noise (generally below 85 dBA); hearing protection is required.
- Duties may be performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Class 1 Driver:
- Operates heavy commercial truck and transports goods while navigating varying weather and traffic conditions with a high degree of independence.
- Unpredictable wait times.
- Regular operation within a day cab truck environment is required.
- Both Positions:
- Physical demands include standing for extended periods, manual dexterity, and lifting or moving up to 50 lbs.
- Exposure to broken glass, sharp objects, and potentially hazardous or biohazardous materials may occur.
- Overtime may be required based on operational needs.
