This could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
About the Role
Black Sage Butcher is a year-round, independent butcher shop in Oliver, BC, known for quality meats, culinary expertise, and strong community ties. We're looking for a full-time Apprentice Meat Cutter to join our small, dedicated team.
Responsibilities Overview
- Efficiently fabricate meat cuts from whole animals and primals with minimal waste.
- Create attractive displays, properly rotate stock, ensure freshness and quality of products.
- Produce sausages and value-added products using provided recipes.
- Ensure a positive customer experience by offering knowledgeable product advice and cooking tips.
- Weigh, wrap, and process purchases using the POS system, ensuring accuracy.
- Maintain a safe and sanitary work environment by following our Food Safety and Sanitation Plans, and cleaning dishes, equipment, and the premises.
This is an ideal position for someone with professional kitchen experience who’s ready to make a shift—literally and figuratively—into something more stable, sustainable, and skill-based.
We are open to training the right candidate who brings a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and a passion for good food.
If the successful applicant is new to the trade or has not previously been registered, they will be registered with SkilledTradesBC after successfully completing the 3-month probation period.
What We Offer
- Hourly wage: $19–$22/hr. Commensurate with experience and production skill-level; finalized following interview, reference check, and on-site “stage”.
- Consistent hours: 30-32 hours/week, across 4 day shifts (Tuesday–Saturday).
- Start date: Estimated September 2, 2025 (TBD).
- Work-life balance: No late nights, no split shifts, and scheduled extended breaks in the off-season.
- Benefits: Possibility of a Health Spending Account and other staff benefits following successful completion of a 3-month probationary period.
- Training: Hands-on mentorship in a fun, collaborative environment.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in butchery or commercial kitchen settings (meat-cutting experience is an asset but not required).
- Interest in learning traditional and modern butchery techniques.
- In support of your training and development within our business, you accept direction and respond well to constructive feedback.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and stand for the duration of your shift.
- Reliability, efficiency, and a team-focused mindset.
- Food Safe certification is an asset.
- A commitment to quality, cleanliness, and excellent customer service.
