Summary of Position

Abalone Construction is a privately owned company with over 40 years specializing in Industrial and Commercial civil construction. We offer construction services in a variety of markets including Infrastructure, Roadbuilding, and Land Development.

Reporting to the foreman, Gradesman are an integral member of field operations, responsible for providing support on our projects.


Role and Responsibilities

Use survey instruments to establish correct grade for road construction projects

Read plans and be mathematically inclined to accurately complete functions of the position

Install stakes as required for layout purposes for both surface & drainage grading

Layout to support culvert installation & then assisting with the installation of culverts

Use of survey equipment

Work closely with operators, foreman and superintendents

Measure distances from reference points to locate boundaries of construction site

Verify graded surface using a laser level, boning rods, batter boards, hand levels etc.

Must be willing and able to learn general construction practices involving water and sewer and road construction

Experience with:

  • grades in relation to piping, earthworks and surface drainage
  • Concrete pipe installation, precast manhole and vault installation

Perform general labourer duties as required


Qualifications, Training and Education

Minimum 3 to 5 years working in civil construction preferably as a labourer or gradesman

GPS and Topcon experience is an asset

Ability to work in a team environment

Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to multitask and meet deadlines

Must possess a valid class 5 driver’s license

Must have valid CSTS-2020, WHMIS 2015, Ground Disturbance and CSA approved 8” steel toe work boots

Must be hard working, have a positive attitude and a willingness to learn


Working Conditions

The gradesman will be working outside in all weather conditions. They must be able to spend long periods of time sitting in a vehicle, or walking/standing on the job site. They must be willing to commit to 50 + hours per week at various project locations. Typical shifts are 7:00am - 5:30pm.
