Full job description

Position Summary:

The position is responsible for delivering high-quality education for future fire service professionals and providing administrative support to the OFA Administration and Management Team for day-to-day College operations.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

● Teach courses according to the College curriculum and in accordance with the defined course standards and outcomes.

● When called upon, function as an official academic advisor, counseling students about the course, academic sequence, and program selections

● Participate in the development and implementation of academic policies, guiding principles, objectives, and functions in accordance with the philosophy of the College

● Conduct daily student inspections, as directed by the College President

● Act as a backup to teach when an instructor is unavailable.

● Perform Equipment Inventory Management.

● Notify management for and Inventory and equipment needs.

● Maintain a full list of all inventory that belongs to the College.

● Plan, schedule, and ensure completion of all equipment maintenance as/when required proactively.

● Assist in preparation of academic schedule.

● Assist in development and introduction of new programs.

● Assist on orientation days (Issuing PPE, providing information sessions to new students, etc)

● Organize existing PPEs according to expiry date and sizes

● Assist in ongoing maintenance of all OFA facilities, resources and equipment

● Ensure fire trucks are in working condition, by conducting regular (weekly) operational checks.

● Ensure all the equipment and PPEs are kept in designated location.

● Arrange and tag all the defective equipment to be repaired and report to Management.

● Ensure the college has all the expandable supplies for classes in advance.

● Ensure supplies are being utilized appropriately, and advise College Administration Team.

● Provide support to other Instructors on NFPA educational program standards/requirements.

● Offer feedback to the OFA management team on continuous improvement of the College.

● Contribute to the development and implementation of academic policies and administration policies, guiding principles, objectives and functions in accordance with the philosophy of the College.

Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with relevant educational credentials and a proven track record of relevant work/teaching experience. Applicants must have the appropriate credentials and experience to be able to instruct on NFPA Programs.

● NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I and Level II.

● NFPA 1072 Hazmat Awareness & Hazmat Operations.

● A minimum of five years of progressively responsible fire-related experience

● Knowledge of the accreditation body's training standards (NFPA, OFM, IFSAC)

● Well-rounded knowledge of fire service professional education and training programs and operations.

● Knowledge of applicable legislation, including: Fire Safety; Occupational Health & Safety;

● Must have working knowledge of modern firefighting, fire prevention, operations and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment.

● Knowledge of, and experience with, adult education principles, techniques, and practices to prepare and present training programs in varied forms across diverse media, including eLearning technology.

● Knowledge of models of teaching and have experience with curriculum development in order to design and deliver course content.

● Research, evaluation and time management skills to develop, administer, score, and evaluate written, oral, and practical evaluations.

● Strong verbal and written communication skills to deliver course material and presentations.

● Keen understanding of fire department operations and fire services personnel roles and responsibilities.

● Excellent ability to work collaboratively, and effectively in a team-based environment as well as independently.

● Demonstrates and promotes professionalism, ethics, and values-based behaviour.

● Proven ability to establish and utilize relationships and networks across a broad range of groups and people to maximize the school’s objectives.

● Advanced knowledge of change management practices to ensure adoption and sustainment of operational changes.

● Experience with continuous improvement initiatives is considered an asset.

● Demonstrated ability to act effectively in stressful situations.

● Demonstrated ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

● Keen understanding of fire department operations and fire services personnel roles and responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

● Certified NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level I

● Certified NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level II

● Certified NFPA 1521 Incident Safety Officer

● OFM Associate Instructor

● OFMEM Provincial Evaluator

● Canadian Armed Forces Experience
