About Us

SMS Security is a growing security services company headquartered in Toronto, proudly serving multi-residential condominium communities across the Greater Toronto Area. We provide guard services, installation and servicing of security systems, mobile patrol, and parking enforcement—and we’re scaling fast. We’re looking for a senior technician to complement our sharp, proactive executive assistant to help power our leadership team.

The Role

This is a senior field technician position focused on low-voltage security systems integrated with doors. The ideal candidate is hands-on, technically strong, and comfortable working independently in the field while maintaining professional standards with customers and team members.

What You’ll Do

Door Operators, Maglocks & Electronic Locking (Primary Focus)

● Install, service, and troubleshoot automatic door operators, maglocks, electric strikes,

and exit devices

● Integrate door systems with alarms and access control systems

● Diagnose issues related to door automation, locking hardware, and low-voltage controls

● Perform light mechanical adjustments such as lock alignment, minor door issues, and hardware tuning

Alarm Systems (Advanced)

● Install, program, service, and troubleshoot intrusion and fire alarm monitoring systems

● Resolve communication faults and device issues

● Perform system testing, commissioning, and customer demonstrations

● Ensure systems are operating properly and ready for monitoring

Maglock & Life Safety Integration

● Install and troubleshoot maglock systems and related release devices

● Integrate systems with fire alarm and emergency egress requirements

● Coordinate with electricians, fire alarm contractors, and other trades when required

● Conduct inspections with city, engineer and fire alarm technician

● Verify proper release on fire alarm activation and power loss

Cabling & Installation Practices

● Run, terminate, and test low-voltage cabling

● Install EMT conduit and other raceway systems where required

● Maintain clean, organized, and professional installation standards

● Label, secure, and route cables properly

Documentation & Service Reporting

● Complete service reports, deficiency notes, and installation documentation

● Record work completed, parts used, and follow-up requirements

● Support closeout documentation and final testing records

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong hands-on experience with door operators, maglocks, and alarm systems
  • Ability to independently diagnose and solve field issues
  • Comfortable working on active residential and commercial sites
  • Professional communication skills with customers, property managers, and team members
  • Working knowledge of Ontario Building Code (OBC) and AODA accessibility requirements
  • Understanding of egress and life safety rules for electrically locked doors
  • Knowledge of fail-safe vs fail-secure locking applications
  • Familiarity with maglock release requirements, REX devices, and push-to-exit buttons
  • Familiarity with Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) standards such as ULC-S561
  • Understanding of monitored alarm system requirements and verification practices
  • Experience with low-voltage cabling, conduit, and field installations
  • Basic understanding of door hardware functions and limitations
  • Ability to identify mechanical issues outside scope and escalate appropriately
  • Strong troubleshooting mindset and attention to detail

Nice to Have (Assets)

Access Control Systems

● Experience with card readers, controllers, I/O modules, REX devices, and door contacts

● Familiarity with systems such as Keyscan, ICT Protege, CDVI, Cansec, or Kantech

CCTV & Video Surveillance

● Experience installing and servicing IP or analog camera systems

● Familiarity with NVRs, DVRs, remote viewing, recording settings, and playback

Networking (Foundational)

● Basic networking knowledge including IP addressing, switches, routers, and PoE

● Ability to connect and troubleshoot devices on customer networks

● Experience with structured cabling and patch panels
