Full job description
The Child & Youth Caregiver plays a vital role in providing care to Métis (Michif) youth within a supportive home environment. This role ensures the safety, well-being, and cultural connection of youth through individualized, trauma-informed support that respects and fosters Métis heritage. Responsibilities include implementing the Plan of Care, building positive relationships, and supporting holistic development in alignment with Métis values.
Responsibilities:
- Direct Care: Provide day-to-day support based on each youth's Plan of Care, ensuring their physical, spiritual, cultural, and emotional needs are met.
- Cultural Engagement: Actively promote and participate in Métis cultural practices and activities that foster identity, pride, and community connections.
- Supportive Relationships: Build trust and rapport with youth and their families, fostering a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment.
- Behavioral and Emotional Support: Utilize trauma-informed, evidence-based approaches to support youth with diverse needs, guiding adaptive behaviors and responding empathetically to emotional challenges.
- Goal Setting and Planning: Engage in assessments, goal-setting, and program planning tailored to each youth’s unique strengths and aspirations.
- Crisis Intervention: Provide effective crisis intervention to maintain safety, utilizing de-escalation techniques as needed.
- Medication Support: Assist with self-administration of medications, following established safety protocols.
- Life Skills Development: Guide and encourage youth in building essential life skills, fostering independence and resilience.
- Community Integration: Facilitate outings, community activities, and integration to broaden youth’s social experiences.
- Household Responsibilities: Participate in household duties, including meal planning, cooking, cleaning, and maintaining a welcoming home environment.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of daily activities, incidents, and progress in alignment with organizational policies.
- Collaboration: Work with the Care Circle—including guardianship workers, cultural mentors, and other professionals—to ensure comprehensive, coordinated support.
Characteristics:
- Deep understanding of and commitment to culturally appropriate, decolonial care for Métis (Michif) youth.
- Strong communication, empathy, and interpersonal skills to build positive, trust-based relationships.
- Commitment to professional growth and continuous learning.
- Interest in family-inclusive caregiving and an understanding of the role family plays in Métis cultural identity.
- Prior experience in foster care is an asset.
Qualifications/Training:
- 2-year diploma in a related field or 3 years of experience in specialized youth support services.
- Training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Naloxone Administration, Trauma-Informed Practice, and Cultural Safety.
- Medication Administration, WHMIS, Food Safe, Life Promotion (Suicide Prevention).
- Standard First Aid, CPR, AED, and a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Criminal Record Check, MCFD Prior Contact Check, and Privacy Training.
