Reporting to the Head of Design, this candidate will be innovative, collaborative, and possess a sense of curiosity to propel our vision. They will own the ability to use their knowledge and expertise to create the best product for our clientele, while working to innovate the experience for our internal and external teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Create new concepts outlining measurements, materials, finishes, and specs. This will be done in support of creating a new concept or in response to an existing one.
  • Encompass client ideas into overall development process.
  • Partner with estimating, purchasing, and project management teams on the design and development of furniture pieces.
  • Produce concepts through a process of drawing, testing, and as needed refinement with internal design and manufacturing teams.
  • Provide insight and reasoning on development and design related issues.
  • Communicate product design through different media including sketches, mockups, and 2D CAD drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Reviewing shop drawings and samples for production quality, fit, finish, and functionality.
  • Create design solutions using qualitative design research methods – Industry trends, observations, and product benchmarking.
  • Maintain organized design documentation for projects.
  • Participate in formal and informal presentations with both internal teams and external clientele to communicate design intent, ability to modify style and content, provide advice, and communicate with different audiences.
  • Strong knowledge of isometric and parametric design elements.
  • Strong knowledge of imperial and metric forms of measurement.

Skills & Knowledge/Qualifications:

  • Possess Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Resident Status, or a valid Work Permit.
  • Think and sketch on paper in order to solve design issues.
  • Ability to be agile and adaptable to problem solving methods as project needs change.
  • Self-manage time, tasks, and next steps while paying attention to detail and verifying work.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing process and materials as well as their impact on designs.
  • Proactively assist and involve others. Initiate collaboration and seek input from team members.
  • 3-5 years of 2D AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suite experience is a requirement.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of upholstered goods is considered a strong asset.

Education and Experience:

  • Post Secondary diploma or degree in a related field is a requirement.
  • Minimum 3 years post-graduate work experience as a practicing Designer with a focus on furniture and product development.
