Full job description

The Content Marketing Strategist is responsible for developing and executing content strategies that drive measurable business results for our clients. This role owns the planning, auditing, governance, creation, optimization, and continuous improvement of content across multiple client accounts, ensuring every piece of content serves a strategic purpose.

Working closely with our SEO Specialists and Strategic Account Managers, the Content Marketing Strategist identifies content opportunities that improve organic visibility, Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), user engagement, and lead generation. They determine what content should be created, why it should be created, and how it supports each client's business goals.

In addition to developing content strategies, this role establishes and maintains content standards across the agency, ensuring all client content aligns with SEO best practices, AI search optimization, editorial quality, brand voice, and Blue Ocean's content methodology. The role combines strategic thinking with hands-on execution, including content audits, strategy development, writing, editing, content briefs, and proactive recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

Content Strategy & Planning

  • Develop comprehensive content strategies aligned with client business objectives, buyer journeys, SEO strategy, GEO, and lead generation.
  • Conduct content audits to identify gaps and opportunities.
  • Determine the content that will deliver the greatest impact based on search demand, competition, industry trends, and client goals.
  • Maintain editorial calendars.
  • Collaborate closely with SEO Specialists.
  • Proactively identify new content opportunities.

Content Creation & Optimization

  • Write, edit, and optimize websites, blogs, and landing pages.
  • Ensure content reflects each client's brand voice.
  • Optimize existing content for rankings, engagement, and conversions.
  • Maintain exceptional editorial standards.

SEO, GEO & AI

  • Partner with SEO Specialists on keyword strategy, topical authority, and internal linking.
  • Stay current on SEO, GEO, and AI search trends.
  • Leverage AI responsibly to improve research, planning, drafting, editing, and workflows.
  • Review content from team members and AI tools.

Collaboration & Performance

  • Work closely with Strategic Account Managers and production teams.
  • Provide proactive recommendations.
  • Monitor content performance using analytics and SEO tools.
  • Recommend optimizations based on performance and changing trends.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 4+ years in content marketing or content strategy with copywriting experience.
  • Agency experience.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Strong understanding of SEO, GEO, EEAT, search intent, and topical authority.
  • Experience conducting content audits and developing strategic content plans.
  • Ability to create detailed content briefs and guide internal teams.
  • Strong research, analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Comfortable using AI tools while maintaining editorial excellence.
  • Experience with Google Analytics, Search Console, SEMrush, Ahrefs, or Screaming Frog.

Nice-to-Have Experience

  • WordPress or other CMS platforms.
  • HubSpot or marketing automation platforms.
  • B2B, professional services, home services, logistics, franchise, or multi-location marketing.
  • Teamwork, Asana, ClickUp, or Monday.com.
