- Deliver direct spiritual, emotional, religious, existential and grief support to patients, families, staff and volunteers in a manner that is inclusive, trauma-informed, culturally safe and respectful of diverse faith traditions, beliefs and worldviews.
- Complete spiritual care assessments, develop plans of care, respond to referrals and document care in accordance with organizational policy, privacy requirements, professional standards and scope of practice.
- Collaborate with interprofessional teams to support complex care planning, palliative and end-of-life care, ethical reflection, serious illness conversations, bereavement support and staff resiliency needs.
- Build and sustain effective relationships with community faith leaders, cultural partners, volunteers and internal stakeholders to support responsive spiritual and religious care across the organization.
- Support recruitment, orientation, supervision and ongoing development of spiritual care staff, learners and volunteers, as applicable.
- Promote evidence-informed practice, continuous quality improvement, safe documentation, professional ethics, confidentiality and alignment with Halton Healthcare’s mission, vision, values and patient safety culture.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in theology, divinity, spiritual care, counselling, psychotherapy or a related graduate-level discipline from an accredited institution.
- Certification as a Spiritual Care Practitioner with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association canadienne de soins spirituels (CASC/ACSS), or demonstrated progress toward certification, is required.
- Registration with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), or eligibility and active progress toward registration where required by scope of practice, is preferred.
- Endorsement by a faith community or demonstrated connection to a recognized spiritual, religious or cultural community is preferred.
- Minimum of two years of relevant clinical spiritual care experience in an acute care, hospital, hospice, long-term care or comparable healthcare environment.
- Demonstrated leadership, coordination or supervisory experience in spiritual care, volunteer services, clinical education or a related healthcare program is preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of spiritual care assessment, grief and bereavement support, end-of-life care, crisis intervention, ethical practice, therapeutic use of self and culturally responsive care.
- Demonstrated ability to provide inclusive multi-faith, interfaith and non-religious spiritual care within a diverse patient, family, staff and community population.
- Strong interpersonal, facilitation, consultation, conflict resolution and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with interprofessional teams and external community partners.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including accurate, timely and professional clinical documentation.
- Demonstrated emotional maturity, self-awareness, ethical judgment, professional boundaries and ability to respond calmly and compassionately in emotionally complex situations.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, prioritize competing demands, travel between sites as required and support service needs across a multi-site organization.
- Proficiency with standard office and clinical documentation systems, and commitment to ongoing professional development, quality improvement and continuing education.
- Satisfactory employment and attendance record required.
