Now Accepting Applications for the 2026 & 2027 Bird Deterrent Seasons (relocation to Fort McMurray required):

Acden Aves is seeking dedicated Bird & Wildlife Biologists to join our bird monitoring and deterrent program at Suncor Base Plant in Fort McMurray. This position requires relocation to Fort McMurray.

Acden Aves is an environmental services company specializing in bird and wildlife deterrent services at oil sands sites. We are a proud partnership with Acden, one of Canada’s largest Indigenous-owned companies.

Bird & Wildlife Monitors have an education or work background in biology, animal sciences, or other related fields, and are comfortable handling birds and wildlife in various conditions. Our ideal candidates have:

  • A degree in biology, animal/veterinary sciences, environmental sciences, or a related field;
  • A valid class 5 driver’s license in good standing.
  • A strong passion for birds and wildlife.
  • A love for working outdoors in a physically demanding job.
  • The ability to comfortably work on or around waterbodies and operate small watercraft.
  • Experience driving trucks or off road vehicles.

Candidates must also be comfortable with:

  • Handling birds and wildlife under stress and in various physical conditions;
  • Working outdoors in all types of weather;
  • Traveling in boats and being on the water
  • Driving large trucks in off-road conditions; and
  • Working in the field in a heavy industrial (mine) environment.

Additional training or experience in wildlife handling, banding and wildlife ID are considered an asset.

Sample Responsibilities:

Data Collection and Reporting:

  • Using tablets and paper forms to collect data about wildlife on site including bird landings, species identification, habitats, and life stages;
  • Recording topographical and GPS data, compass bearings and distance measurements;
  • Entering data into various databases and systems; and
  • Preparing data and reports for clients and regulatory officials.

Wildlife Duties:

  • Identifying bird species using morphological traits and field markings;
  • Handling birds and wildlife in various conditions; and
  • Hazing birds and wildlife based on species, physical condition, and behaviour.

While this is a seasonal contract (approximately February to November), there will be opportunities for year-round employment, including wildlife sweeps and maintenance work during the winter months.
