We’re pleased to offer this exciting career opportunity as a Fisheries Biologist with Yucwmenlucwu (Caretakers of the Land) LLP. Yucwmenlucwu is a growing natural resource management company under the Splatsin Development Corporation, which is in Enderby, BC. We provide a diverse range of environmental, archaeology, and forestry services to our many partners and clients, as well as technical support to the Splatsin Community. Our team is comprised of over 30 professionals and technicians focused on the protection and conservation of cultural and natural resources. Summary of Duties:

The Fisheries Biologist will assist our environment team in the management and delivery of various projects and conservation initiatives, specifically in the fields of fish and fish habitat, aquatic ecology, water management, environmental impact assessments, and environmental permitting and monitoring. We reserve the right to make reasonable adjustments to your duties from time to time as we may deem necessary to more effectively carry on Yucwmenlúcwu operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Client liaison and business development
  • Coordination and project management of fisheries and aquatic studies, programs, and initiatives
  • Design and implement aquatic habitat mitigation, restoration and compensation measures
  • Project management including developing proposals, work plans, budgets and assigning tasks to technical staff, coordinating scheduling, and oversee implementation of works
  • Conduct all stages of environmental studies from proposal preparation through data collection, interpretation, and reporting
  • Aquatic habitat assessments, environmental monitoring, permitting, and reporting
  • Ensure company and client safety standards and processes are met by assigned project teams and personnel
  • Train, mentor, supervise and develop professional development plans for technical staff and Splatsin community members
  • Prepare technical letters and detailed scientific reports
  • Manage contracts and sub-consultants

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with a First Nations community or organization on fisheries management issues
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Biology or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years of multidisciplinary experience in aquatic ecology/freshwater fisheries biology/management, and field biology in an environmental consulting capacity.
  • Understanding freshwater fisheries in the Southern Interior of BC and their habitat requirements
  • Registered (or eligible, within 6 months) Professional Biologist (RPBio) in BC with the BC College of Applied Biology
  • Certifications such as Level 1 First Aid, backpack electrofishing, swift water rescue technician, environmental monitoring for construction, erosion and sediment control are assets
  • Thorough understanding and application of fish habitat assessment, mitigation and compensation methods
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal regulatory processes, guidelines, and best management practices in BC as they relate to environmental monitoring and permitting of industrial activities
  • Experience in stream and lake sampling techniques
  • Understanding of instream/environmental flow assessments and modeling tools
  • Ability to cultivate relationships with community members, colleagues, and partners
  • Excellent organization, prioritization and time management skills
  • Proven ability to work within project budgets, under contracts and with sub-consultants
  • Demonstrated technical writing and research experience
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
  • Discretion and respect for confidentiality
  • Possess a current and valid Canadian Driver’s license and clean drivers abstract
