The Opportunity

Tata Steel Minerals Canada is currently seeking a Mine Surveyor to join their highly skilled team to work on a Fly-in/Fly-out basis of 2 Weeks On/Off with a standard 12 hours/day schedule, to and from the Menihek region in Labrador, near the town of Schefferville, QC.

The main pick-up points are St. John’s, Gander, Deer Lake and Happy Valley-Goose Bay in NL, Halifax, NS, Moncton, NB, and Montreal, QC.

Reporting to the Manager of Mining Operations, the Mine Surveyor is responsible for supporting Mine Operations by staking various limits in the field to ensure compliance to plan, conduct pit asbuilds to keep site topography up to date, and provide support drill and blast activities and other site projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Daily/weekly topographic surveys of pits, dumps, stockpiles, and construction projects
  • Daily elevation control of pits and dumps
  • Staking ore/waste contact limits, pit limits, dump limits, road limits, blast patterns, and others as required
  • Conduct month end topographic surveys of ore stockpiles, pits and dumps
  • Compile month end Survey report with volumes
  • Ensure all Survey information for site is current and maintain all historical Survey data pertaining to site
  • Generate topographical maps for pit, dumps, stockpiles and other areas as required
  • Ensure pits and dumps are on design and limits are being adhered to. Report non-compliance areas Engineering and Supervision
  • Ensure pit wall slopes are within tolerances
  • Grade/limit control for construction projects
  • Maintain up to date critical infrastructure file for site
  • Drafting of surveys, generation of topographies and calculations of volume. Provide current survey information to Engineering and Geology group to facilitate developing mine plans
  • Monthly water elevation levels of tailings ponds
  • Support other departmental Survey needs as required
  • Other duties and tasks as required

Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid drivers license
  • A Diploma in Survey Technician or Survey Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in an open pit mining environment
  • Previous experience working in a remote camp is beneficial
  • Experience with drafting Survey data. Previous use of MineSight software is preferred
  • Experience using Trimble GPS equipment (TSC3 controller, R10 GPS rover, total station)
  • Experience with survey software including Trimble Business Center
  • Pilot Certificate for Basic Operations of a small RPAS issued by Transport Canada
  • Experience with drone Surveying. Previous use of DJI Matrice 300 drone is preferred
  • Experience processing drone Survey data. Previous use of Pix4D mapping software is preferred
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Good working knowledge of Adobe PDF

Technical Competencies & Skills

  • Must be able to work 12 hour day and night shifts for 14 to 21 days at a time
  • Must be willing to work overtime if required
  • Must be able to work in a remote environment in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to walk for long periods of time on uneven ground
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to handle a large workload and adapt to changing priorities
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English. Bilingualism is considered an asset
  • Excellent safety and attendance record
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to learn new technology and software with minimal training
  • Must have a positive attitude, work well with others, and treat all employees with respect
