Full job description

An Apprentice Welder at Seaspan supports the construction, repair, and maintenance of vessels by learning and performing welding tasks in a shipbuilding environment under the guidance of certified journeyperson welders and supervisors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with welding, cutting, grinding, and fitting metal components used in ship construction and repair
  • Learn and perform FCAW all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead)
  • Read and interpret basic blueprints, weld symbols, and work instructions
  • Prepare materials by measuring, aligning, cleaning, and tacking components prior to welding
  • Operate hand and power tools safely, including grinders, torches, and welding equipment
  • Follow Seaspan’s safety procedures, quality standards, and shipyard regulations at all times
  • Work in confined spaces, at heights, and in outdoor or industrial shop environments as required
  • Support quality inspections and make corrections under supervision when needed
  • Actively participate in on-the-job training and apprenticeship schooling requirements

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Foundations as a welder
  • Basic welding knowledge or pre-apprenticeship training is an asset
  • Strong willingness to learn and take direction
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment
  • Good attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills

Work Environment:

  • Industrial shipyard and fabrication shop setting
  • Exposure to noise, heat, heavy materials, and welding fumes (with required PPE)
  • May involve shift work depending on production needs

Pay: $34.00-$44.00 per hour
