POSITION TITLE: Nus Wadeelzulh Community School Teacher
WAGE: $59,711 - $109,520
DIRECT REPORT: School Principal
SUPERVISOR: School Principal
ABOUT TAKLA FIRST NATION:
The traditional territory of the Takla Nation is located in North Central British Columbia and totals approximately 27,250 square kilometres. The territory is a rich environment of lakes, rivers, forests, and mountains, bordered on the west by the Skeena Mountains and east by the Rocky Mountains. Takla Nation is an amalgamation of the North Takla Band and the Fort Connelly Band, a union which occurred in 1959. Our traditional lands are the geographic area occupied by our ancestors for community, social, economic, and spiritual purposes. Carrier and Sekani place names exist for every physical feature and place that we occupy. Each name reflects the significance of the feature or site, and today, it provides us with historical information about the rich history and extensive knowledge of our land and resources.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The teacher is the educational leader in the classroom and will ensure that the School's Program and curricula are implemented to maximize student learning experiences. They plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The teacher is responsible for supervising and evaluating all students within his/her teaching assignment. Consistent with the Takla Department of Education, the Teacher will work within an established framework for the delivery of educational services which support the Schools Program, values and mission statement. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, the Teacher will demonstrate a strong commitment to the planning for improvement process in support of student achievement and reports directly to the Nus Wadeelzulh Community School Principal.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Instructs students using various teaching methods, for example, lecture and demonstration, and uses audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.
- Prepares course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements Takla Nation and school.
- Teaches in accordance with Nus Wadeelzulh Community School values, mission statement and First Nations School Educations standards.
- Assigns lessons and corrects homework.
- Administers tests to evaluate students' progress, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of progress.
- Keep and maintain attendance records and follow up with principal and guardians on a regular basis.
- Maintains order in the classroom by applying corrective measures when necessary.
- Meets with parents to discuss student progress and problems.
- Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
- Performs related duties, for example, sponsoring one or more activities or student organizations and counselling students in adjustment and academic problems.
- Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
- Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations
- Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations
- Keep up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities
- Perform certain duties including but not limited to student support, counselling students with academic problems and providing student encouragement
- Participate in department and school meetings, parent meetings
- Deal tactfully with staff, students, parents and Takla Administration.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education and experience
- Bachelors of Education degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent
- Member of Teacher Regulation Branch (or working towards membership)
- Qualified to teach in Canada.
- 3 to 5 years of teaching experience with youth and adults.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- An understanding of adult Aboriginal student needs.
- Proven ability to successfully work and interact with children, youth, parents/guardians, staff and visitors in a sensitive, effective and professional manner.
- Good organizational, time management and prioritization skills.
- Strong morals, work ethics, sound judgement and reasoning skills, and a commitment to discretion and privacy.
- Criminal record check clearance
- Flexibility in the delivery of learning instruction
WORK CONDITIONS:
- Must be willing to work and live in a remote northern community
