Full job description

Overview

This position performs essential manual tasks, including tending to poultry and operating machinery. Work may be outdoors or inside barns. This is a physically demanding role that may require heavy lifting and long hours.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Handling and caring for poultry
  • Set and monitor water lines, air flow and temperature in barns, pens and chicken coops
  • Monitoring animal health; removing any trapped, sick or dead birds
  • Gathering eggs; packing and operating equipment
  • Running manure belts and adjusting litter depth when necessary
  • Monitoring and removing pests
  • Keeping the barn clean, which includes manure removal and blow down
  • Maintaining sick pens for injured birds
  • Disinfect pens, barns or poultry houses
  • Ensure farm safety and bio-security procedures are followed
  • Perform general farm maintenance on caging equipment, including installations when necessary
  • Maintain livestock performance records; write daily basic progress reports; keep logs and maintain records
  • Other duties i.e. equipment maintenance, general cleaning maintenance, loading and unloading trucks/trailers

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Secondary (high) school graduation certificate
  • No education or experience required, however, 6-12 months of previous experience is an asset
  • Automated manure handling or storage system
  • Egg gathering system
  • Bulk grain or feed handling - automated
  • Automated environmental control equipment
  • Manure handling and storage

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in poultry barns with exposure to dust, noise, odors, and varying temperatures
  • Physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods
  • May require use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Work may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
