Full job description

Village Media is seeking political journalists to join a new Parliament Hill bureau of The Trillium.

The Trillium is Village Media’s Ontario political news website. For the past three years, The Trillium has been devoted to Ontario provincial political news and has developed a reputation for impactful accountability-focused journalism at Queen’s Park. Now, we’re expanding to Parliament Hill to bring hard-hitting, enterprising federal political news to our readers across Ontario.

Reporting to The Trillium’s Ottawa bureau chief, the reporters will be responsible for covering federal political news for The Trillium and Village Media’s network of Ontario local news outlets.

The successful candidate will be passionate about breaking news that serves Ontario voters, holds governments to account and doesn’t follow the pack. The reporter will be expected to go beyond the daily news cycle by developing sources and accessing documents that lead to exclusives. They will be team-oriented and work collaboratively under the bureau chief's direction.

The Kind of People We're Looking For

Village Media is beyond a traditional media company. We're a community impact organization. Our purpose is to help communities become stronger by keeping people informed, connected, and engaged.

That means we look for people who genuinely care about the places they serve. We need teammates who are curious, collaborative, adaptable, and energized by solving problems. You’ll fit right in if you take initiative, embrace change, and are always willing to step outside your job description to help the team or the community succeed.

We're building something ambitious in the digital media space, so we value:

Humility over ego
Optimism over cynicism
Ownership over "that’s not my job"

We move quickly, support one another, and believe meaningful work comes from people who care deeply about both their colleagues and their neighbours. If you're excited by the opportunity to make a real difference where people live, you'll thrive here.

At Village Media, aptitude matters. Attitude matters more.

This role will be primarily in-office and on Parliament Hill, with flexibility for some remote work when the House rises.

Responsibilities:

  • Reporting federal political news stories for readers of Village Media’s network of local news websites across Ontario, and for political insiders who subscribe to The Trillium
  • Developing sources and accessing documents to break federal political news stories
  • Participating in the peer-editing of the bureau’s stories for accuracy, readability and Canadian Press style

Qualifications

  • A proven ability to break enterprising accountability-focused news stories
  • Experience covering federal politics is an advantage, as is experience in municipal and provincial government press galleries
  • The ability to work some nights and weekends when required
  • Reside in the National Capital Region or within commuting distance

Salary Range: $65,000 - $100,000

If this sounds like the perfect position for you, we would love to hear from you! To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume, along with relevant samples of your work.
