Full job description

Canada West Veterinary Specialists (CWVS), a privately owned and operated, multi-disciplinary emergency and specialty hospital is looking for exceptional Veterinary Technicians to join our General Wards and Intensive Care Unit.

The first veterinary specialty hospital in Metro Vancouver, CWVS is a state-of-the-art Level VECCS level 1 and VetCOT certified facility. We have 30+ veterinarians in the following disciplines: emergency and critical care, surgery, neurology, radiology, internal medicine, and oncology. In addition to a rehabilitation department, 6 ORs, 2 isolation wards, and a newly redesigned ER, ICU, and Wards, we are equipped with 2 digital radiology suites, a new CT, and a 1.5T MRI.

Why should you join CWVS?

Being a Veterinary Technologist/Technician isn’t your job; it’s your career. We embrace this philosophy and as a result, our VTs are critical to our hospital operations. With a new training program in development, monthly in-house Continuing Education (CE) events exclusive to CWVS employees, and a CE allowance for every team member, we are invested in your growth and development. We value the skills you’ve worked hard to obtain. We encourage you to use them to their full extent while supporting your development as you acquire more.

Working in General Wards allows you the opportunity to care for patients from multiple departments with a diverse set of conditions. If you’re new to emergency or specialty medicine, it’s a great place to start your career journey with CWVS.

In our ICU, you will be responsible for providing advanced nursing care to patients along a spectrum of case acuity. You can look forward to seeing the type of fascinating cases you’ve only read about. While working closely with our Board Certified Criticalists, your critical thinking skills will be essential to your success in this role. In addition to excellent nursing skills, a keen desire to learn, a deep respect for the human-animal bond, and communicating with clients with empathy and understanding are just a few of the attributes we look for in the people who join our team.

As a 24-hour hospital, shift rotations including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays are to be expected. We aim for a balanced schedule that allows you adequate time off for adventure or time with your family.

Come join a team of passionate professionals committed to providing gold-standard medicine to the pets in our community! In addition to a supportive environment committed to your growth and development, you can look forward to:

  • Competitive wages
  • Shift premiums for evening, overnight, and weekend shifts
  • Subsidized Group Benefits Program
  • Employer-provided Pet Insurance
  • Annual Wellness spending account

  • Annual VTS Membership dues
  • An active social committee dedicated to activities and contests
  • A ward dedicated to housing your pet while you work
  • Complimentary coffee machine and food days to keep you adequately fueled while you work

What we’re looking for:

  • Graduate of an accredited program for Veterinary Technologists (Registered Veterinary Technologist designated preferred, but not required)
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of normal vital parameters, and the ability to recognize changes and/or abnormalities
  • Strong knowledge of asepsis
  • Strong mathematics skills (drug dose calculations, CRI’s, dilutions)
  • Self-motivated individual with a desire to learn and to excel within the profession
  • Ability to stay calm, recognize and establish priorities, and execute patient triage at all times.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision when necessary and ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent communication skills, computer and phone skills
  • High level of professionalism

Our Technicians typically work 10 hour days, 4 days a week but may be scheduled to work 5 days a week, 8 hour shifts in accordance with hospital need.
