Full job description
Do you like figuring out how things work?
We are looking for someone who enjoys troubleshooting.
Someone who sees a machine that isn't working properly and wants to understand why.
Someone who is comfortable working independently, but who also communicates well, helps their teammates, and knows when to ask for another set of eyes.
If you enjoy learning new technology and solving unfamiliar technical problems, this could be a very interesting career.
Intriquip Instruments supplies, installs and services veterinary medical equipment for customers across Canada. This position will be based in Emerald Park, Saskatchewan and will primarily support customers in Western Canada.
Our technicians work on an unusually broad range of equipment and technology.
One day you might troubleshoot an anesthesia machine with a plumbing or pressure problem.
Another day it could be:
- An electrical fault in a treatment table
- An electronic problem in a patient monitor
- An X-ray system that isn't producing the expected image
- A computer that needs to be rebuilt from a clean Windows installation
- A network connection preventing imaging equipment from communicating
- Configuring PACS or veterinary imaging software
- Installing and commissioning a new digital X-ray system
- Diagnosing a sterilizer or dental unit
- Working through an unfamiliar problem using technical documentation and logical troubleshooting
You are not expected to already know how to repair all of these things.
We are looking for someone who wants to learn how.
The Person We're Looking For
Technical experience matters, but the person matters more.
We are looking for someone who:
- Is naturally curious and enjoys understanding how things work
- Approaches problems methodically instead of guessing
- Is confident working independently
- Communicates clearly when they need help or additional information
- Works well as part of a small team
- Takes ownership of problems and follows them through
- Enjoys learning unfamiliar technology
- Can explain technical issues clearly to customers
- Is comfortable admitting when they don't know something and then finding the answer
- Pays attention to details without losing sight of the overall problem
- Treats customers and coworkers with respect
- Takes pride in doing work properly
Our Core Values
How you work is just as important as what you already know.
At Intriquip, our core values are:
Be Compassionate
Treat customers and coworkers with patience and respect.
Be a Learner
Stay curious. Ask questions. Learn from mistakes. Keep improving.
Help First
Look for ways to help customers and teammates succeed.
Do The Right Thing
Take responsibility and make the right decision even when it is inconvenient.
Be Humbly Confident
Be capable and decisive without pretending to know everything.
These are not just words on the wall. We use them when making hiring and performance decisions.
What You'll Learn
This role can develop into a very broad technical skill set.
Depending on the equipment and manufacturers you work with, you will learn to troubleshoot and service systems involving:
- AC and DC electrical systems
- Electronics and circuit boards
- Sensors, switches and control systems
- Plumbing, pneumatics, vacuum and pressure systems
- Motors, pumps and mechanical assemblies
- Computers and Windows operating systems
- Ethernet networks and basic IT troubleshooting
- Digital imaging systems
- PACS and DICOM imaging environments
- Veterinary imaging applications
- X-ray generators and high-voltage systems
- Digital radiography detectors
- Radiation-producing equipment
- Calibration and preventive maintenance
You will receive internal training as well as training from equipment manufacturers and suppliers.
We don't expect you to know everything when you start.
We do expect you to keep learning.
What You'll Do
As a Field Service Technician, you will:
- Diagnose equipment problems and determine the root cause
- Repair electrical, mechanical, electronic and computer-related faults
- Install and commission new veterinary equipment
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspections
- Configure computers and software associated with medical equipment
- Install and configure imaging workstations
- Learn to configure PACS and other veterinary imaging applications
- Troubleshoot networking and communication problems between equipment and computers
- Provide remote technical support when appropriate
- Travel to veterinary hospitals and clinics to perform service
- Communicate clearly with customers throughout a service call
- Document your work and maintain accurate service records
- Work with other Intriquip technicians when additional expertise is required
- Participate in manufacturer technical training
- Continue developing your technical knowledge over time
What Backgrounds Might Fit?
There is no single perfect previous job for this position.
People with backgrounds in the following areas may be a good fit:
- Electronics technician
- Electrical technician
- Biomedical equipment technician
- HVAC or refrigeration service
- Agricultural equipment service
- Automotive diagnostics
- Industrial maintenance
- Appliance or commercial equipment repair
- Instrumentation
- Computer hardware or networking
- Mechanical service
- Field service
A diploma, trade certification or technical training is an asset, but it is not our primary hiring criterion.
Demonstrated troubleshooting ability, curiosity, communication and willingness to learn are more important.
Computers Are Part of the Job
This is not strictly a mechanical repair position.
Modern veterinary equipment increasingly combines mechanical systems, electronics, computers, networks and software.
You should be comfortable learning how to:
- Perform a clean Windows installation
- Install drivers and applications
- Configure computer hardware
- Troubleshoot basic Windows issues
- Configure IP addresses and network connections
- Connect imaging devices to workstations and servers
- Install and configure veterinary imaging applications
- Understand the basics of DICOM and PACS systems
You do not need to already be an IT professional.
You should be someone who is comfortable around computers and interested in becoming more capable with them.
Working Independently
Our technicians regularly travel to customer locations and work without another technician standing beside them.
You need to be comfortable:
- Arriving at a customer site on your own
- Gathering information about the problem
- Working through a troubleshooting process
- Making decisions within your level of knowledge
- Calling another technician or manufacturer when appropriate
- Keeping the customer informed
- Taking responsibility for getting the issue resolved
Independence does not mean working in isolation.
Our technicians share knowledge, ask each other questions and help each other solve difficult problems.
The strongest technician is not the person who never asks for help.
It is the person who knows how far to take a problem independently and when collaboration will produce a better result.
Travel
Intriquip serves customers across Canada, while this position will be primarily focused on supporting customers in Western Canada.
Travel is a normal part of this role and may include:
- Day trips throughout Saskatchewan
- Driving to customers across Western Canada
- Overnight trips within Saskatchewan and neighbouring provinces
- Air travel to more distant customer locations
- Occasional travel elsewhere in Canada when needed
- Occasional manufacturer training outside Canada
A valid driver's licence is required.
Applicants must be comfortable travelling regularly and working independently at customer locations.
Physical Requirements
This is a hands-on technical position.
You must be able to:
- Work with hand and power tools
- Work inside, underneath and around equipment
- Move and position equipment
- Lift approximately 70 lb when required
- Work on your feet for extended periods
- Drive for extended periods
About Intriquip

- Ultrasound equipment
- Anesthesia equipment
- Patient monitoring
- Dental equipment
- Surgical equipment
- Sterilization equipment
- Treatment and surgical tables
- Other veterinary medical technology

Who Will Do Well Here?
You may be a particularly good fit if you find yourself doing things like:
- Taking something apart because you want to understand how it works
- Troubleshooting your own computers instead of immediately replacing them
- Reading a manual or wiring diagram when you encounter something unfamiliar
- Searching for the root cause instead of stopping at the first obvious symptom
- Enjoying technical problems that require both your hands and your brain
- Teaching yourself new technologies because you are curious about them
- Helping someone else solve a problem even when it technically isn't yours
If that sounds like you, we would like to hear from you.
How to Apply
Please submit your resume along with a short response to the following question:
Tell us about something you have diagnosed, repaired, built or configured that you are particularly proud of. What was wrong or what were you trying to accomplish, and how did you figure it out?
We care much more about how you approached the problem than whether it involved veterinary equipment.
Pay: $65,000.00-$85,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- Company events
- Dental care
- Extended health care
- Mileage reimbursement
- On-site parking
