Lakehead University’s newly established Department of Veterinary Science at the Thunder Bay campus (Ontario, Canada) invites applications for six (6) faculty positions and three (3) technical staff positions and two (2) animal care attendant positions to support the University’s role in delivering the Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program (CDVMP).

The CDVMP is a partnership between Lakehead University and the University of Guelph established to deliver the Ontario Veterinary College’s (OVC) accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) curriculum to students from Northern Ontario. This program is intended to contribute to addressing the long-standing shortage of veterinarians serving northern and rural communities. The program commenced in Fall 2025 at OVC, with the inaugural Lakehead-based student cohort scheduled to begin in Thunder Bay in September 2027 following completion of the purpose-built and renovated facilities required for program delivery.

These appointments represent an important stage in the department’s development and offer an opportunity for faculty and staff to contribute to the academic, research, and operational foundations required for the successful implementation of this collaborative professional program. The Department of Veterinary Science (Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies), Lakehead University, Thunder Bay Campus, invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured appointment with expertise in

Companion Animal Veterinary Practice,

with an anticipated start date of Fall 2026 or January 1 2027.

A veterinary degree (DVM or equivalent) and experience in companion animal veterinary practice are required, as is research experience in an area related to companion animal practice. Candidates must have a graduate degree or board certification or be eligible for board certification in a field relevant to companion animal practice. Preference will be given to candidates with a doctoral degree (PhD, DVSc or equivalent). Eligibility for licensure in Ontario (College of Veterinarians of Ontario) is preferred.

Continuing education training in professional veterinary communication would be considered an asset. The successful candidate will deliver companion animal lectures and laboratories in clinical medicine courses. In addition, the successful candidate will work with the OVC Veterinary Communications team in delivering communication-based curriculum within the CDVMP at Lakehead University.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated strong communication and collaboration skills and will use these skills to develop networks across broad communities of expertise, effectively collaborating with faculty from a variety of disciplines.

The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of the accredited veterinary curriculum within the CDVMP at Lakehead University’s Thunder Bay campus, working collaboratively within a team-taught curriculum delivery model alongside OVC faculty colleagues.

To foster collaborations and develop a broad professional network and community of practice, an application for adjunct faculty status in an appropriate department at OVC by the successful candidate will be supported. Additionally, the successful candidate will have opportunities to teach within Lakehead University’s Honours Bachelor of Science and other cognate programs at Lakehead University.

The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing an independent, externally funded research program consistent with their disciplinary expertise and with the Department’s developing research profile. Expectations include the supervision and training of graduate students and the pursuit of external funding to support these activities. Collaborative research with faculty in cognate units at Lakehead University and with partners at the University of Guelph is encouraged.

Compensation:

This position may be filled at any rank, depending on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The expected compensation range for this position is:

• Assistant Professor: $88,094 - $133,223
• Associate Professor: $130,000 - $180,000
• Full Professor: $165,341 - $215,341

Salary will be determined in accordance with the Lakehead University Faculty Association Collective Agreement and will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. The above-noted salary ranges are subject to revision as a result of collective bargaining outcomes.
