Junior Network Administrator / Field Technician

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: $82,000–$94,000 per year
Work Location: In person / Field-based
Primary Work Area: Vancouver / Lower Mainland, BC

Job Summary

Teknet Network Solutions is seeking a motivated and reliable Junior Network Administrator / Field Technician to join our team full-time.

This is a hands-on networking role working directly with enterprise network infrastructure in large-scale campus and commercial environments. It is an excellent opportunity for someone with foundational networking knowledge who wants to move beyond help desk or classroom experience and develop practical skills working with production networks.

You will work alongside experienced network professionals on network infrastructure upgrades, equipment replacements, switch migrations, troubleshooting, documentation, and ongoing network modernization projects.

For the right candidate, this position offers significant exposure to the day-to-day work involved in supporting and upgrading a large enterprise network, with an opportunity to develop toward more advanced network administration and network engineering responsibilities.

Why This Role is Different

This is not primarily a desk-based IT or help desk position.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Work directly with Cisco enterprise network switches and related infrastructure
  • Participate in live production network upgrades and cutovers
  • Install, replace, patch, validate, and troubleshoot network equipment
  • Work in large enterprise and campus network environments
  • Gain practical experience with VLANs, switching, fibre and copper connectivity, PoE, uplinks, and structured cabling
  • Troubleshoot real connectivity and physical-layer issues
  • Learn established enterprise network standards, documentation practices, and change procedures
  • Work alongside experienced network administrators and engineers
  • Build practical experience applicable to future Network Administrator and Network Engineer positions

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, replace, rack, and patch enterprise network switches and related hardware
  • Assist with staging and preparation of network equipment prior to deployment
  • Perform copper and fibre patching and equipment migrations
  • Participate in network switch replacements, cutovers, and infrastructure upgrades
  • Trace and identify network connections and connected equipment
  • Verify network connectivity before and after scheduled changes
  • Perform basic network troubleshooting using command-line and network diagnostic tools
  • Assist with switch port configuration and validation under established procedures
  • Maintain accurate equipment, port, cabling, and network documentation
  • Label equipment and cabling according to established standards
  • Perform network equipment and telecommunications-room audits
  • Identify and document discrepancies encountered during field work
  • Work independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively during larger network changes
  • Maintain clean and professional work areas in active production environments

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is dependable, technically curious, organized, and comfortable learning by doing.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has a genuine interest in networking and network infrastructure
  • Is a self-starter who can work independently once provided with direction
  • Is comfortable working in telecommunications rooms and around production network equipment
  • Has strong attention to detail and follows instructions carefully
  • Is comfortable using basic hand tools and network/cabling tools
  • Is able to perform physical work, including lifting and installing network equipment
  • Is comfortable working in confined or telecommunications spaces when required
  • Communicates clearly and professionally
  • Is comfortable using Microsoft Windows and common productivity applications
  • Has a valid driver's licence
  • Has access to a reliable vehicle

Foundational Networking Knowledge

Candidates should have a basic understanding of networking fundamentals. You do not need to be an experienced Network Administrator, but you should be familiar with concepts such as:

  • IPv4 addressing and subnetting
  • DHCP and default gateways
  • Ethernet networking
  • MAC addresses
  • Network switches and switch ports
  • VLANs and access/trunk concepts
  • Power over Ethernet (PoE)
  • Copper and fibre network connectivity
  • Basic switch and network troubleshooting
  • Tools such as ping, traceroute, ipconfig and command-line utilities
  • Reading basic network diagrams and following port/cabling documentation

Nice to Have

The following are considered assets but are not required:

  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification or progress toward a CCNA
  • Networking diploma, certificate, or related post-secondary education
  • Previous experience with Cisco Catalyst switches
  • Familiarity with the Cisco IOS/IOS-XE command-line interface
  • Experience with structured cabling or network hardware deployments
  • Experience with fibre-optic cabling and transceivers
  • Previous exposure to enterprise, data-centre, or campus networks
  • Experience working in telecommunications or network rooms
  • Familiarity with network monitoring or documentation systems

Work Environment & Schedule

This is a full-time, permanent salaried position involving a combination of independent and team-based field work.

Most work is performed on-site within the Lower Mainland, with a significant portion of the work occurring in Vancouver.

Because production network infrastructure sometimes cannot be interrupted during regular business hours, candidates must be comfortable occasionally participating in evening, overnight, or after-hours maintenance windows.

Some days may involve physical equipment installations and network cutovers, while others may involve equipment staging, auditing, troubleshooting, documentation, or preparation for upcoming network changes.

Travel between work sites may occasionally be required.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $82,000–$94,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications
  • Full-time, permanent employment
  • Mileage reimbursement for approved work-related travel
  • Paid time off
  • On-site parking (permit provided)
  • Hands-on experience with large-scale enterprise network infrastructure
  • Exposure to Cisco enterprise switching environments
  • Opportunity to participate in significant network modernization projects
  • Practical mentoring and experience working alongside experienced network professionals
  • Opportunity to develop toward more advanced Network Administrator / Network Engineer responsibilities

Application Questions

Please answer the following when applying:

  • Do you have a valid driver's licence? (Required)
  • Do you have access to a reliable vehicle? (Required)
  • Are you comfortable occasionally working scheduled evening or overnight network maintenance windows?
  • Briefly describe any hands-on experience you have with network switches, structured cabling, fibre, or other network infrastructure.
