Underwriting Manager Position

Location: Goderich, Ontario

Reports To: Director of Operations

We are seeking an experienced and collaborative Underwriting Manager to lead our underwriting operations and contribute to the continued growth and profitability of our organization.

Position Summary

The Underwriting Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, development, and performance of the underwriting department. This role requires underwriting expertise, oversees underwriting authority and guidelines, supports broker and agent relationships, and ensures profitable growth across personal, farm and commercial lines.

The successful candidate will balance sound underwriting discipline with a customer focused approach while supporting strategic company initiatives and fostering a positive team culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and performance management to underwriting staff.
  • Foster a collaborative and accountable team environment.
  • Support employee development through training and succession planning.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Oversee and monitor underwriting activities to ensure consistency with company guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain underwriting standards that support portfolio profitability and sustainable growth.
  • Analyze underwriting results and recommend corrective actions where necessary.
  • Assist with reinsurance submissions and underwriting audits as required.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and corporate initiatives.
  • Support product development and underwriting innovation.
  • Participate on internal committees and special projects.
  • Act as a key member of the management team.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7-10 years of progressive underwriting experience in the property and casualty insurance industry.
  • Demonstrated leadership or management experience is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of personal, farm and commercial insurance products.
  • Excellent analytical, decision-making, and risk assessment skills.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strong broker relationships.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency with insurance management systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • CIP Designation or working toward it
