Laboratory & Prototype Technologist
JOB PURPOSE
Lead test methodology, test equipment, and prototype development efforts to support laboratory services and provide support to the Manager, Technical & Aerosol Laboratory Services in planning, coordinating, and undertaking lab testing.

KEY DELIVERABLES
1. Prototype Development Support
- Operate the Prototype Lab to fabricate product design prototypes as a service to internal customers, including Product Development, Marketing, and Operations teams
- Serve as the 3D printer lead by supporting the needs of 3D printing users, maintaining all 3D printer equipment, and guiding the student resources completing setup and post-processing activities
- Collaborate with Product Development staff and remain apprised of project activities to anticipate and meet prototyping needs
- Provide guidance to Product Development staff in decisions to use appropriate prototyping technologies (e.g., 3D print, machine, mold, etc.)
- Actively research and track leading-edge technologies in additive manufacturing, identifying new technology to keep processes efficient and effective
- Develop new or improved test methodology, equipment, and fixtures to support laboratory services
- Collaborate with lab staff to ensure equipment and supplies are available and suitable for use and assist setting up equipment as required
- Maintain familiarity with all testing in the labs to support lab staff when test issues arise (to monitor efficiencies and/or temporarily support backlogged work)
- Commission new equipment and provide training where appropriate
- Work with vendors to resolve technical problems related to all lab equipment and 3D printers
- Accurately document new processes related to prototyping and testing to maintain consistency in output once best practices are established
- Validate and document newly implemented test equipment/fixtures for QMS, regulatory, and maintenance purposes
- Support tests/projects by preparing engineering reports that include methodologies, results, and analyses where appropriate.
- Oversee and maintain Prototype Lab equipment and supplies to support organizational needs and requirements
- Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation, including the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.

Education & Experience:
- Diploma or Degree in mechanical, mechatronic, or chemical engineering, or life sciences
- 3-5 years of experience in a laboratory support, product development, or manufacturing environment
- Experience using machine shop equipment including drill presses, milling machines, and related equipment
- Experience in 3D printing, casting, assembling, surface preparation and finishing
- Proven electronic design and assembly knowhow
- Computer literate with:
- Experience with 3D CAD packages (SolidWorks preferred)
- Intermediate to advanced experience in MS Office applications
- 3D Printing setup and management related software
- CNC milling software experience preferred
- Basic understanding of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
- Experience with wet laboratory methodologies considered an asset
- Ability to work with and understand statistical computations
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Good organization and time management skills
- Demonstrated ability to work in a consistently thorough and precise manner
- Per job requirements
- Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
- Excellent fine motor skill with proven ability to work with small hand tools and devices
- Lifting or moving up to 15lbs may be required
- Compensation based on a regular work week of thirty-seven and a half (37.5) working hours; additional hours may be required
- Eligible for overtime compensation (pre-approval required)
- Office and lab based
- Domestic travel may be required
