JOB TITLE: Resource Social Worker
Department: Family Support Team
Classification/ Hours: Full-time, Permanent
Reports to: Social Work Team Leader
LOCATION:
Heiltsuk Kaxla Society is a indigenous child and family service agency that provides support services in the remote community of Bella Bella, on Campbell Island, in the Central Coast of BC, home to the Haíɫzaqv Nation. The Nation has a registered population of approximately 1400 living on reserve.
JOB SUMMARY:
Heiltsuk Kaxla Society is a C3 delegated agency offering resource development and voluntary services. Heiltsuk Kaxla Society works with and supports children, families, and other agencies through support services. The agency supports children, families, and other service organizations to ensure that children are safe, guided, uplifted, and respected while being grounded in their culture with a strong sense of place, belonging and identity. Heiltsuk Kaxla Society is a culturally focused agency striving to provide exceptional support services through prevention based practice. Community and interagency connections are paramount in creating a healthy support system for the children, youth, and families that we serve. Working in partnership will guide a holistic approach to both our prevention and intervention support services.
The Resource Social Worker will be responsible for recruiting, developing, and maintaining a diverse range of resources to support children, youth, and families. The Resource Social Worker is responsible for maintaining a caseload of resource homes, recruiting, developing, and maintaining a range of resources to support children successfully living or staying outside of their home. The Resource Social Worker will ensure that support services and resource recruitment are delivered through a trauma-informed lens and are consistent with Heiltsuk Kaxla Society's vision. The Resource Social Worker will be an active team member supporting success for Heiltsuk children in care on and off reserve.
JOB OVERVIEW:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Resource Social Worker to join our team and make a meaningful difference in the lives of children, youth, and families. In this vital role, you will provide comprehensive support, advocacy, and resource coordination for families and caregivers facing complex challenges. Your empathetic approach will help empower clients to overcome barriers, access resources, and achieve goals. This position offers an opportunity to work in a culturally rich and supportive environment while having a positive impact within the community.
RESOPONSIBILITIES:
- Recruit, train, support and monitor foster and respite caregivers
- Promote awareness and education of respite and relief services for families
- Plan and implement resource recruitment sessions within the community, completing all required documentation for prospective caregivers
- Provide orientation, support, training opportunities and ongoing monitoring for care providers
- Conduct home studies for prospective caregivers
- Meet all physical and electronic file keeping requirements.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and HKS cultural team to provide cultural resources for children in out of care arrangements on reserve
- Collect and share information on cultural opportunities and prevention programs for resource caregivers and the children and youth in their homes
- Maintain an accurate list of all Heiltsuk children in care arrangements on and off reserve, working collaboratively with MCFD and the HTC Band Representative
- Work in partnership with HTC Urban Support Team and HKS Roots Worker regarding Heiltsuk children in care and collaborative service delivery
- Work collaboratively with MCFD and Heiltsuk Kaxla Society in preparing children for transitions in and out of care, and support in permanency planning and ongoing care planning for Heiltsuk children in care
- Deliver comprehensive case management and engage in case planning
- Attend case conferences, talking/healing circles, court, and mediation as required
- Maintain basic knowledge of Heiltsuk cultural practices
- Create safe, healthy environments for our young people to reach their full potential
- Network and partner with interagencies in developing essential services, programs, and community events
- Engage and participate in community events and land-based activities focused on child, youth, and family wellness as needed
- Receive internal, interagency, and MCFD referrals
- Complete daily case notes and ensure electronic and physical files hold the holistic story of each family
- Maintain high standards in report writing, electronic record keeping, and file organization in accordance with Kaxla's reporting standards
- Work flexible hours to adapt to needs and to participate in the rotating after hours on call team
- Work collaboratively with the Heiltsuk Kaxla Society Team and other service providers inside and outside of the community
- Work in collaboration with MCFD Child Protection Worker when out of home placements are required
- Support youth in accessing Youth Agreements through MCFD
- Carry out various responsibilities under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA) and Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators (AOPSI)
- Ensure resource files include necessary documentation and reporting requirements are maintained
- Participate in weekly team meetings and support team members with child and family centered events, programs and initiatives as required
- Be part of a rotating weekend on-call scheduling offering family support services
- Other duties as assigned or as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work
- A minimum of 3-5 years' experience in the field of child welfare, family services, or child and youth care
- Demonstrated ability to work under limited direction both individually and in a team setting
- Experience in case management working from a strength-based, trauma informed, and family-focused framework
- Experience working with families, children and youth with complex needs
- Awareness of child welfare and the Child, Family and Community Service Act and other applicable legislation, or willingness to learn
- Willing to maintain a high quality of skills sets through continuous learning, workshops, and training
- Experience in Resource Social Work an asset
- Experience working with Indigenous peoples
- SAFE Home Study Certification or willingness to obtain
- C3 delegation or above, or willingness to obtain
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License an asset
- Criminal Record Check completed upon hire
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
- Understanding of the impact of colonization on Indigenous people
- Knowledge of and/or willingness to learn about the Heiltsuk Nation, culture, traditions, and values
- Ability to work collaboratively and establish positive working relationships with a variety of teams/groups, community members, organizations, and other stakeholders
- Demonstrated skills in time management with the ability to multitask and prioritize work duties and responsibilities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, effective listening skills, and public speaking skills
- Ability to intervene and/or manage child, family, or community crises situations in a calm and effective way
- Superior interviewing, assessment, and case management skills or willing to obtain these skills
- Ability to meet deadlines, demonstrate an attention to detail, and maintain confidentiality
