Full job description

Trainee / Student Videographer (Contract, Calgary)

We are looking for a student or trainee videographer to join us on a contract basis. This is an ideal opportunity for someone building their portfolio who wants real, on-location shoot experience with flexible, project-based work.

About the role

This is a casual contract position with irregular, assignment-based work rather than fixed weekly hours. You will be booked per assignment, so the volume of work will vary depending on what projects are active. It suits someone looking for flexible work that fits around studies or other commitments.

A meaningful part of our work involves First Nations communities. Some assignments will take place in First Nations communities and on reserve, capturing footage tied to community projects, events, and stories. This work calls for someone who is respectful, culturally aware, and comfortable taking direction from community members on what can and cannot be filmed.

What you will do

  • Capture video footage for a range of assignments, including projects with First Nations communities
  • Work independently on location and deliver clean, usable footage
  • Coordinate with us and with community contacts on scheduling, scope, and deliverables for each booking
  • Follow community guidance and consent protocols on site, and handle footage in line with OCAP principles (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession), recognizing that the community owns its content and stories
  • Manage and maintain your own equipment on shoots

What you need

  • Your own videography equipment (camera and core kit)
  • Based in Calgary and available for in-person shoots
  • Reliable, punctual, and comfortable with a flexible, on-call schedule
  • Respectful and professional when working in First Nations communities, with a willingness to learn and follow cultural and data protocols
  • A reel or sample work, even student or personal projects, is a plus

Travel

Most assignments are in and around Calgary. Some require travel, including to First Nations communities and reserves outside the city. When a shoot is outside Calgary, travel will either be arranged for you or reimbursed, and mileage is covered.

Compensation

Hourly rate within the posted range, confirmed per assignment based on scope. Schedule is flexible.

How to apply

Send your resume along with a reel, portfolio, or links to any video work you would like to share.

Pay: $20.00-$28.00 per hour
