Controls & Automation Technologist

Location: St. John’s, NL

What You’ll Do:

As a Controls & Automation Technologist, you will be a key member of our Controls & Automation team, supporting a wide range of industrial, marine, and offshore customers. You will be involved in the design, programming, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of automation and control systems, helping our clients improve safety, reliability, and operational performance.

Your day-to-day will involve:

  • Collaborating with the Controls & Automation team to deliver automation projects and technical services safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
  • Programming, configuring, troubleshooting, and commissioning PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems.
  • Performing field service activities, including system diagnostics, maintenance, repairs, upgrades, start-ups, and optimization of industrial control systems.
  • Supporting control panel design, electrical drawings, documentation, and bill of material development.
  • Troubleshooting industrial communication networks and integrating field instrumentation, motor controls, drives, and control systems.
  • Responding to emergency breakdowns and customer support requests, providing timely technical solutions to minimize operational impacts.
  • Promoting a strong safety culture by actively participating in safety discussions and adhering to established safety procedures.
  • Maintaining accurate project, service, and technical documentation.
  • Other duties as required.

What We're Looking For

We’re excited to meet candidates who have:

  • Post-secondary education in Instrumentation, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education, trade certification, and industrial automation experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and industrial automation experience. Candidates with extensive industry experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for preparing schematics and panel layouts, control panel design, and bill of materials generation.
  • Demonstrated experience with PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems, including industrial communication protocols. Experience with the Rockwell Automation suite of industrial automation products (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, FactoryTalk View), Siemens S7/TIA Portal, Modbus TCP/IP, EtherNet/IP, Profibus, and Profinet is considered a strong asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Offshore Basic Survival Training (BST), or a willingness to obtain certification, is considered an asset.
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, Atlantic Canada, and offshore locations as required.
  • Strong organizational, time management, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing customer and project requirements, including work outside regular business hours.
  • Valid driver's license as travel is required.
