Student stories to demonstrate impact at ALSO
Lindsay began attending ALSO in October 2024, filled with excitement and determination. From day one, she committed herself fully—working diligently and giving her best effort in every course. "When I started with ALSO, I had never used a computer," Lindsay shared. "But through my coursework, I learned how to navigate one quite well." Her journey wasn't without doubts. “I'm so grateful for this program,” she said. "I honestly thought I'd start and then give up, as I had with other online schooling formats. But the encouragement and feedback
from my teachers kept me going.” In June 2025, Lindsay proudly carries a renewed sense of confidence. "I'm better prepared to find and keep a job now,” she declared.
Stephanie left school in 2010, but in May 2024, she took a bold step forward by joining ALSO to pursue her Ontario Secondary School Diploma. After more than a decade away from formal education, Steph returned with unwavering determination and a clear goal in mind. Despite facing health challenges and external distractions that sometimes interrupt her studies, Stephanie consistently demonstrates resilience and dedication. Her commitment to completing coursework is matched by her appreciation for the support she receives—she shared, “When I do struggle, my teacher is always reliable and prompt with assistance.” Now, with just one credit remaining, Stephanie is on track to graduate in the 2025–2026 school year.
Robbie started at ALSO a year and a half ago. When Robbie attended high school, he struggled academically and did not earn his diploma. In addition to his academic struggles, Robbie received an acquired brain injury as a result of a car accident. Despite these challenges, Robbie pursued his love of sports and worked for both the Toronto Argonauts and the Ottawa Rough Riders, and is currently working in the concession at Canadian Tire Centre. However, having never completed high school, Robbie decided to return to school. With the support of Robbie's teacher, he received the additional support and accommodations he needed for success. In June, Robbie graduated from high school and earned the Principal's Award in recognition of his perseverance and commitment to learning.
If you are interested in being part of ALSO’s teaching team, please send your letter of interest and resume to Kim Oastler, ALSO Executive Director, by 4:00 p.m. on July 19, 2026, via email at kim@also-ottawa.org.
