Overview

We are seeking a friendly and detail-oriented part-time Store Clerk to join our retail team after one of our employees has retired. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing excellent customer service, managing sales transactions, selecting saleable donated goods, and ensuring the store remains organized and inviting. This role offers an opportunity to develop skills in retail sales, merchandising, and customer engagement within a dynamic environment. This role also gives you an opportunity to work for a not-for-profit that returns all profits back into the community through grants that support social services, food bank, children's programs, and many more!

Hours

This is a part-time position - 9:30am - 5:00pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Saturdays

Responsibilities

  • Greet customers warmly and assist them with their shopping needs.
  • Look for ways to grow the customer base.
  • Select donated items that are desirable and of good value and profit margin. Merchandise items attractively. Organize stock levels for in-season and out-of-season goods.
  • Ensure accurate daily cash reconciliation, following established procedures.
  • Identify high-value items and collectibles for specialized merchandizing and/or on-line sales.
  • Organize the distribution and pickup of items unsuitable for store inventory.
  • Prepare, in advance, tasks for volunteers.
  • Follow safety procedures to ensure the store is safe for customers, staff and volunteers and co-workers. Identifies areas of concern, or areas requiring maintenance to the Store Manager immediately.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the store environment
  • Maintain organized merchandise displays and ensure shelves are stocked appropriately
  • Provide excellent customer service by addressing inquiries promptly and professionally
  • Manage time effectively to ensure all responsibilities are completed during shifts

Skills

  • Experience in retail sales, cashiering, or merchandising required
  • Basic computer skills for merchandize pricing required
  • Second-hand thrift store experience is desirable
  • Physically fit (see physical requirements below)
  • Strong communication skills, including phone etiquette and active listening
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of POS systems and basic math skills for cash handling
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management to prioritize tasks efficiently
  • Customer service-oriented mindset with a friendly demeanor
  • Familiarity with retail environment operations such as merchandising and inventory management
  • Content to complete repetitive work
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Assisting with volunteer training
  • Respectful and inclusive with staff, volunteers and customers which come from a diverse background

Physical Requirements

  • Lift up to 20 pounds
  • Turn from side to side (full range) while lifting up to 20 pounds
  • Walk and/or stand for almost the entire shift (aside from breaks)
  • Reach fully: up, down, sideways, and outwards
  • Squat
  • Climb up and down fifteen (15) stairs
  • Climb a four (4) step ladder, three (3) feet high
  • Kneel
  • Drive the company truck on errands and to the landfill in all weather conditions
  • Load/unload and sort goods from the box of a pickup truck that are potentially hazardous (primarily at the landfill). Occurs outdoors in all seasons.
  • Repetitive motion activities i.e., use of fabric tag gun
  • Adequate vision and hearing to complete all job duties and communications

Note that because this position involves receiving donated inventory, there is exposure to year-round outdoor weather (hot, cold rain, snow, etc.) when accepting/sorting donated goods from the back door. There may be possible exposure to unknown materials, which have the potential of being hazardous, when accepting/sorting those goods. Personal protective equipment (gloves) are provided.

This position provides an engaging work environment where interpersonal skills, technical knowledge, and organizational abilities are valued. The Store Clerk plays a vital role in creating a positive shopping experience for customers while supporting the store’s operational success.

Pay: $16.00-$18.50 per hour
