Full job description

We are currently looking for a temporary (3+ month) Red Seal Cook to join our team to cover for a medical leave. This position may lead to permanent full time. PLEASE NOTE: We require candidates that have graduated from a recognized 12-month program in cooking or journeyman papers (red seal) OR 5 years recent, related experience in a care facility setting with knowledge of therapeutic diets.

ROLE:

Under the direction of the Manager of Food Services, utilizes established menus and recipes for the preparation of assigned food items and in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures. Ensures cleanliness of the kitchen area.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Prepares assigned food items by following established menus, recipes and quantity quotas, determining ingredients and quantities required and assembling ingredients and equipment required for cooking.
  • Plans preparation and cooking schedule.
  • Advises the Manager of Food Services of any shortage of supplies; accepts delivery of food items and other supplies, and ensure that supplies are received in good condition and stored in a safe and sanitary manner.
  • Reports any equipment breakdown and any unusual occurrences to appropriate personnel.
  • Cooks and seasons assigned food and therapeutic diet items such as soups, sauces, salads, starches, meats, fish, poultry, vegetables and desserts by methods/procedures such as roasting, frying, grilling, steaming, poaching, boiling, baking and bulk rethermalization; tests food items for palatability and temperature and adjusts accordingly.
  • Completes/records equipment temperature audits and food temperature audits.
  • Carves food items such as meat and poultry and controls portioning of food items to ensure recipe yield meets assigned quantity quotas.
  • Maintains established food rotations in storage in order to minimize spoilage and waste.
  • Assigns tasks to designated Dietary Aides.
  • Attends in-service training and workshops as required by Westminster House.
  • Reports hazards, near misses, unusual occurrences, accidents, and unsafe or faulty equipment/furniture to the Manager of Food Services.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Grade 12 education
  • Graduation from a recognized 12-month post-secondary program in cooking or journeyman papers (red seal) or 5 years experience in a care facility setting with knowledge of therapeutic diets.
  • Holder of current Level I Food Safe Certificate.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and to organize work
  • Ability to deal with others effectively

Ability to physically carry out the duties of the position and to operate related equipment.

Pay: $27.56 per hour

Expected hours: 36.0 – 40.0 per week
