Full job description

Think in systems. Build with people. Deliver what works.

About SysEne (sis-een)

SysEne brings together systems engineering and a systems approach to project management. We work for owners and operators of public transit and other complex infrastructure. We help plan, build, and deliver complex technology systems by connecting technology, processes, and people across the full life cycle, and we stay with the work until it is running. We work on long-term programs, not one-off jobs, and we get things done.

We are a small, high-standards team, and we invest heavily in the people who join us.

The opportunity

You will work with the lead project manager on a large, multi-year transit technology program and stand in for them when they are away. When you stand in, you run the project day to day: scope, schedule, budget, risk, and a lot of people and parties to coordinate. This is not a coordinator role. You work on the owner's side, as part of their team, and you speak to executives as well as to the people doing the work.

The program is part of our long-term work for a regional transit network. It covers operations and customer technology: telecom networks, voice and data radio, control and monitoring systems, and real-time passenger information across buses, trains, and stations. It is technically demanding work that owners and communities depend on.

What you will do

  • Run scope, schedule, budget, risk, and reporting for the project, and stand in for the lead when needed.
  • Coordinate vendors, contractors, designers, and client staff in operations, IT, engineering, and customer experience.
  • Hold contractors to account: prepared, on time, and delivering what was agreed, using commercial, management, and technical levers.
  • Drive delivery through testing, commissioning, launch, and handover.
  • Track interfaces and integration between systems, and deal with issues early.
  • Brief managers, steering groups, and executives clearly.
  • Build tools that make the work faster, such as trackers, dashboards, or automated reports, using AI where it helps.

What you bring

  • Integrity, and the habit of thinking things through.
  • Drive and ownership. You push things across the line and find a way forward when the answer isn't obvious.
  • You listen. Requirements live in people, not just documents. You ask good questions, and you listen past what people ask for to understand the actual need behind the request.
  • You bring people along. You get teams to decisions, and you understand that people see things differently and that interests compete.
  • You like to learn. You enjoy complex problems that cross disciplines. You are comfortable with uncertainty, you go into the details when the risk calls for it, and you bounce back from setbacks.
  • About 3 to 8 years delivering projects or engineering for transit, infrastructure, or technology systems.
  • At least one project seen through from beginning to end. A university capstone or co-op project can count. A multi-year project is a plus.
  • A degree in engineering, computer science, information systems, or a related field.
  • Very organized, with attention to detail.
  • Comfortable leading without formal authority, and speaking to executives.

The experience range is a guide. Talent and how you think matter more than years of experience, and applicants outside the range are welcome.

Helpful

  • Telecom, radio, real-time information, automatic train control, CAD/AVL, or operational technology systems.
  • Software or systems engineering experience, and familiarity with INCOSE practice.
  • Building small applications with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, for example to turn engineering data into models, views, or reports.
  • PMP, EGBC P.Eng., or similar.

What sets you apart

  • You have led part of a complex project yourself, and you can tell us what was hard and what you would do differently.
  • You have taken a system through more of its lifecycle, from concept to operation, and delivered an outcome, not just a study or a recommendation.
  • You solve problems that are technical, business, and political at once. You understand that organizational dynamics shape technical outcomes, and you approach them with curiosity rather than frustration.
  • You keep a lot of moving parts organized without losing sight of the whole system.
  • You keep the team informed, clear blockers for others, and follow up so nothing falls through the cracks.
  • You use AI on real work and know how to check the result.

What we offer

  • Real systems that people use every day.
  • Senior practitioners who take mentorship seriously, and a named Development Owner for your long-term growth.
  • Pairing on real work, and forums where we share what we learn.
  • A salary of $120,000 to $155,000 per year.
  • Health, dental, vision, life, and disability coverage, paid vacation, professional development, and flexible hybrid work in Vancouver.

How to apply

Send your resume and a cover letter of no more than one page. In it, tell us about two things:

1. Something you built, delivered, or improved: a system, a tool, or a process. Briefly, what the challenge was, your part in it, what you learned or changed along the way, and how you checked that it worked. Student, capstone, and side projects count.

2. How you use AI or other tools in your work, and how you check what they give you. If you haven't used AI much yet, tell us how you would start.

If you are shortlisted, you will present on a realistic case and talk through a live scenario.

SysEne is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from all qualified individuals.
