Position Overview

Santec Canada is seeking an Automation Engineer to join our Research & Development team. Reporting to the Director of R&D, North America, this role is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing automated manufacturing solutions that improve the efficiency, quality, and consistency of Santec’s production processes.

The successful candidate will be a self starter who can work independently. As part of the R&D team, this role interacts with Production, Process, and Quality to develop innovative automation systems that reduce manual effort and enhance product quality.

Responsibilities

  • Independently design, develop, and implement automation systems to improve manufacturing processes.
  • Identify opportunities to improve production efficiency, quality, and repeatability through automation.
  • Design and integrate robotic, electromechanical, vision, and motion control systems for manufacturing applications.
  • Develop automated assembly, testing, inspection, and calibration processes.
  • Create prototypes, evaluate concepts, and transition successful solutions into production.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Production, Quality, and Engineering teams to understand production challenges and develop practical automation solutions.
  • Design and prototype automation equipment and support its implementation into production.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, operating procedures, and maintenance instructions for automated equipment.
  • Work with equipment suppliers to specify and source automation systems as required.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize automated systems to maximize reliability and uptime.
  • Provide training and technical support to manufacturing personnel on automated equipment.
  • Ensure all automation systems comply with company safety standards and applicable regulations.
  • Stay current with emerging automation technologies and recommend continuous improvements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • Engineering degree in Robotics, Automation, Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, or related field.
  • 3+ years' experience designing and implementing automation solutions in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with PLCs, precision motion control stages, machine vision, sensors, and automated equipment.
  • Experience with CAD software for mechanical design.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing process improvement methodologies.
  • Experience working with fiber optics or photonics manufacturing is preferred.
  • Familiarity with optical alignment processes and equipment is considered a strong asset.
  • Self-starter with strong initiative and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills with a drive to deliver results.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
