Scale‑Up Chemist Supervisor

Reports To: Manufacturing / Technical Manager

Location: Toronto, ON

Salary Range: $70,000 – $80,000 annually

We are seeking a highly skilled Scale‑Up Chemist Supervisor to lead the transition of formulations from R&D into pilot and commercial manufacturing.

Job Summary

The Scale‑Up Chemist Supervisor oversees the daily technical operations of scale‑up activities from bench to production. You will lead and mentor a technical team in the manufacturing of pilot batches, validate processes for scale, and troubleshoot in‑real‑time to ensure a seamless technology transfer from R&D to the manufacturing floor.

Key Responsibilities

Team Supervision: Lead and coordinate the activities of technicians and junior scale‑up chemists, including scheduling, training, and performance management.

Pilot Batch Execution: Oversee pilot and initial commercial batch production to ensure critical process parameters (e.g., mixing action, heat transfer) are maintained at scale.

Process Validation: Collaborate with R&D and Quality teams to validate and verify manufacturing protocols and master batch records, ensuring reproducibility in high‑volume operations.

On‑Floor Troubleshooting: Act as the first point of contact for technical issues during scale‑up, such as phase separation, equipment deviations, or formulation inconsistencies.

Compliance Oversight: Ensure all scale‑up activities conform to cGMP regulations, internal SOPs, and safety protocols.

Equipment Knowledge: Apply expertise with industrial‐scale equipment (high‑shear mixers, homogenizers, pump systems) to optimize process performance.

Documentation: Prepare technical reports, change control documentation, and updates to batching instructions. Provide detailed reports to senior management, Quality Assurance, or regulatory bodies as required.

Required Qualifications & Skills

Education: Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Experience: 5+ years in formulation development or manufacturing scale‑up, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or team‑lead role.

Technical Expertise: Demonstrated experience operating and optimizing industrial manufacturing equipment and comprehensive knowledge of cGMP requirements.

Leadership Abilities: Strong leadership and coaching skills, with the ability to manage priorities and maintain team performance in a dynamic environment.

Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey technical data and collaborate with cross‑functional teams such as Quality Assurance, Supply Chain, and R&D.

Working Conditions

Standard work week in a Toronto‑based manufacturing facility

Have to be avialble sometimes after hours

Some flexibility in hours may be required to support operational needs

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive salary range of $70,000 – $80,000 annually
