Position Type: Permanent, Full-time (35–40 hours/week)

Location: Primarily Fernwood Neighbourhood House, 1240 Gladstone Avenue, Victoria, BC, with work at 1285 Gladstone Avenue and 1180 Queens Avenue as required.

Hours: Monday to Friday. Scheduled shifts may fall between 7:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Position Overview

Fernwood Neighbourhood House is seeking one qualified Early Childhood Educator (ECE) or Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA) to join our Childcare team.

The successful candidate will support the growth, learning, and well-being of children by creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment while building positive relationships with children, families, and coworkers.

Wage

If hired as an Early Childhood Educator (ECE)

The hourly wage for this ECE position is currently $23.00/hour + ECE Wage Enhancement (ECEWE).

Upon implementation of the Collective Agreement and confirmation/receipt of applicable funding, the wage rate will increase to:

  • Probationary Rate: $26.84/hour + ECE Wage Enhancement (ECEWE)
  • After Successful Completion of Probation: $31.57/hour + ECE Wage Enhancement (ECEWE)

Eligible employees will receive retroactive pay adjustments as outlined in the Collective Agreement, subject to confirmation and receipt of applicable funding. Retroactive adjustments will be applied back to the employee’s eligible start date of employment.

The timing of these wage changes will be implemented in accordance with the Collective Agreement implementation schedule.

The ECE Wage Enhancement (ECEWE) is a separate wage enhancement funded directly by the Province of British Columbia and is not included as part of the base wage. If the ECEWE program is discontinued or Fernwood Neighbourhood House is no longer eligible to participate, the employee’s wage will be based on the applicable base wage rate only.

If hired as an Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA)

  • The hourly wage for this ECEA position is currently $21.00/hour.

Key Responsibilities

If hired as an Early Childhood Educator (ECE)

Child Development & Programming

  • Plan, implement, and assess developmentally appropriate, play-based learning experiences.
  • Develop emergent curriculum based on children's interests and observations.
  • Support children's social-emotional development.
  • Implement the BC Early Learning Framework in daily programming.

Child Guidance

  • Foster positive behaviour guidance using respectful, developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Encourage self-regulation and conflict resolution.

Health, Safety & Supervision

  • Ensure children's health, safety, and well-being through active supervision.
  • Follow licensing regulations and centre policies.
  • Maintain health records and incident documentation.

Environment & Daily Care

  • Create welcoming, inclusive learning environments.
  • Support children's independence and self-help skills.
  • Assist with cleaning and sanitizing learning spaces.

Communication & Professionalism

  • Build strong relationships with children, families, and coworkers.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Attend staff meetings and complete other duties as assigned.

If hired as an Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA)

  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of children by being supportive, caring, and present.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for parents and guardians.
  • Promote children's social-emotional development through daily interactions.
  • Assist in creating supportive, emergent, and inclusive learning environments.
  • Support children's development through observations and age-appropriate activities.
  • Reinforce developmentally appropriate expectations and routines.
  • Build positive relationships with children, families, and coworkers.
  • Assist with daily cleaning and sanitizing of program spaces.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Early Childhood Educator (ECE)

Required

  • Valid BC Early Childhood Educator Certificate
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Minimum one year of experience working in licensed childcare
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team

Assets

  • Special Needs Educator (SNE) Certificate
  • Additional languages
  • Trauma-informed practice
  • Knowledge of BC Child Care Licensing Regulations

Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA)

Required

  • Valid BC Early Childhood Educator Assistant Certificate
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Unionized Position

Fernwood Neighbourhood House is a unionized workplace, and this position is part of the BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU) bargaining unit.

Wages, benefits, and other terms and conditions of employment are governed by the Collective Agreement. Please note that certain wage increases may be subject to the availability of funding. Where applicable and funding is received, eligible employees may receive retroactive wage adjustments in accordance with the Collective Agreement and funding requirements.

Union dues will be deducted from employees' pay in accordance with the Collective Agreement and BCGEU policies..
