Full job description
About Us
At Borderless CPA, we are not a traditional accounting firm. We are a licensed, entrepreneurial CPA practice with a strong tax focus, specializing in Canadian, U.S., and cross-border tax, accounting, and financial advisory services.
We work with growth-minded entrepreneurs building e-commerce brands, SaaS companies, digital agencies, online service businesses, and digital product companies across Canada, the United States, and internationally.
Our clients expect more than accurate filings. They rely on us for timely financial reporting, practical tax planning, proactive issue identification, and commercially useful advice. We combine strong technical standards with modern cloud systems, automation, and AI-enabled workflows to help founders make better decisions and scale with confidence in a borderless world.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Canadian CPA to join us as Manager, Tax and Accounting.
This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who can independently oversee a portfolio of clients, review work prepared by a remote delivery team, lead client communications, manage deadlines, and bring engagements through to completion.
The successful candidate will be part technical reviewer, part client advisor, part team leader, and part firm builder.
This is not a role where work is simply delegated downward and passed upward for completion. You will be expected to understand the file, identify the issues, direct the team clearly, review the underlying work, and take ownership of the final result.
The role reports directly to the firm owner.
What You'll Own (Key Responsibilities)
Client Portfolio Leadership — 50%
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for an assigned portfolio of business clients.
- Understand each client’s business, ownership structure, reporting requirements, tax profile, deadlines, and ongoing advisory needs.
- Oversee recurring monthly accounting, reporting, forecasting, year-end accounting, financial statements, tax filings, and advisory deliverables.
- Review workpapers and client deliverables for completeness, accuracy, technical support, and presentation quality.
- Lead client meetings and provide clear, practical recommendations.
- Maintain accurate status tracking, open-item lists, deadlines, responsibilities, and follow-up communications.
- Ensure engagements progress consistently and do not remain idle because of unclear ownership or incomplete follow-up.
- Escalate material issues early, together with a proposed solution or recommended course of action.
- Take responsibility for bringing assigned work through to completion.
Tax Strategy and Compliance — 20%
- Lead or contribute to Canadian tax planning, restructuring, and advisory engagements for entrepreneurs and owner-managed businesses.
- Review and, where required, prepare Canadian tax compliance filings, including T2, T1, T4, T5, GST/HST, and related information returns.
- Identify cross-border, foreign-reporting, payroll, sales-tax, related-party, and corporate-structure issues.
- Conduct technical research and document conclusions clearly.
- Prepare client-facing memoranda, presentations, calculation models, implementation plans, and written advice.
- Work collaboratively with Canadian and U.S. tax specialists on cross-border matters.
- Translate complex technical matters into practical recommendations clients can understand and act upon.
Financial Reporting and Advisory — 20%
- Review monthly financial reporting packages and year-end accounting files.
- Deliver budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow analysis, variance analysis, and CFO-style financial insights.
- Identify accounting errors, balance-sheet risks, unusual transactions, and missing support before deliverables reach the client.
- Help clients interpret financial results and make better business decisions.
Team Leadership and Firm Building — 10%
- Provide clear assignments and instructions to remote staff.
- Review staff work thoroughly before it is escalated to the firm owner or delivered to clients.
- Provide practical coaching that improves first-draft quality and prevents recurring errors.
- Assist with workflow planning, capacity management, delegation, and deadline prioritization.
- Develop and improve SOPs, checklists, templates, review programs, and reusable work products.
- Participate in prospective-client discovery calls and new-client onboarding.
- Help build a culture of accountability, transparency, technical quality, and continuous improvement.
What Strong Performance Looks Like
Within the first several months, you should be able to demonstrate that you can:
- Independently manage assigned clients and engagements with limited follow-up.
- Maintain complete and current file-status information.
- Identify deadlines and risks before they become urgent.
- Provide review-ready work rather than relying on the firm owner to reconstruct or complete files.
- Lead client calls confidently and send clear, accurate follow-up communications.
- Give staff sufficiently detailed instructions to produce high-quality work.
- Detect technical and accounting issues rather than relying only on preparer conclusions.
- Bring problems forward with analysis and proposed solutions.
- Reduce the firm owner’s day-to-day review and coordination burden.
- Create systems and work products that make future delivery more efficient.
What You Need to Succeed
You:
- Are a licensed Canadian CPA in good standing.
- Have at least five years of relevant public-practice experience, preferably serving private companies and owner-managed businesses.
- Have strong experience with full-cycle accounting, monthly reporting, year-end financial statements, compilation engagements, and Canadian corporate tax compliance.
- Are comfortable reviewing T2, T1, T4, T5, GST/HST, and related filings.
- Have experience delivering tax-planning or restructuring advice.
- Can review staff-prepared work critically rather than relying solely on checklists or representations that a file is complete.
- Are comfortable leading client relationships and communicating directly with founders, executives, and controllers.
- Are highly organized and maintain reliable written records of deadlines, open items, responsibilities, and next steps.
- Take ownership of outcomes and do not allow work to stall because of ambiguity or incomplete delegation.
- Are willing to perform hands-on technical work when required.
- Exercise sound professional judgment and know when to escalate.
- Communicate clearly, candidly, and promptly when a deadline, technical issue, or client commitment may be at risk.
- Are comfortable working in a remote environment with a distributed team.
- Want to help build a modern, growing professional-services firm.
AI, Technology, and Modern Workflow Skills
You must be comfortable using technology and AI tools as part of a professional accounting and tax workflow.
The successful candidate should be able to:
- Use generative AI tools to accelerate research, drafting, issue identification, data analysis, process design, and preparation of first drafts.
- Write effective prompts and provide sufficient factual and technical context to obtain useful outputs.
- Critically evaluate AI-generated work rather than accepting it at face value.
- Verify technical conclusions using authoritative sources, professional judgment, and the underlying facts.
- Use AI to improve efficiency without delegating professional responsibility or judgment to the tool.
- Develop reusable prompts, templates, checklists, and workflows that improve team productivity.
- Work effectively with cloud accounting, workflow, communication, document-management, tax, and automation platforms.
AI proficiency is important, but judgment, technical competence, accountability, and review quality remain essential.
Nice to Have
- Completion of some or all levels of the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program.
- Experience with Canadian corporate reorganizations and owner-manager planning.
- Experience with U.S. tax forms such as Forms 1120, 1065, 5471, 5472, 1040, and 1040-NR.
- Familiarity with T1134, T106, NR4, and other foreign or related-party reporting.
- Experience with e-commerce, SaaS, digital agencies, online businesses, or technology companies.
- Experience managing remote accounting teams.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, KPI reporting, and fractional-CFO services.
What Is in It for You?Remote-First Flexibility
Work remotely from anywhere in Canada, with meaningful autonomy and responsibility.
Meaningful Client Ownership
Build trusted relationships with ambitious entrepreneurs and become an important part of their decision-making process.
Advisory-Focused Work
Work on tax planning, financial advisory, forecasting, structuring, and client strategy—not only recurring compliance.
Leadership Opportunity
Lead a distributed team, improve firm systems, and have a direct influence on how the practice operates and grows.
Direct Access to the Firm Owner
Work closely with the owner on technical matters, client strategy, process improvements, and firm development.
Modern Tools and Workflows
Use cloud platforms, automation, and AI-enabled processes to reduce low-value work and improve quality and efficiency.
Path to Senior Leadership
The role offers a path toward increased responsibility, senior leadership, and broader portfolio or service-line ownership for someone who consistently demonstrates strong judgment, accountability, and execution.
Performance-Based Bonus
In addition to base salary, you will be eligible for a performance-based bonus.
Performance will be assessed based on factors such as:
- Technical quality and review readiness;
- Timely delivery and deadline management;
- Client communication and relationship ownership;
- Accuracy and completeness of file-status reporting;
- Effective delegation and staff development;
- Reduction in avoidable senior-review time;
- Process improvements and reusable firm assets; and
- Overall contribution to client retention, service quality, and firm growth.
To Apply
Please provide:
- Your resume;
- A short cover letter or note explaining why this role is a strong fit and why you are considering a change now; and a brief example of how you have used AI, automation, or technology to improve the quality or efficiency of accounting, tax, advisory, or team-management work; and
- Confirmation that you are a licensed Canadian CPA and resident in Canada.
