JOB POSTING: RESPITE WORKER (CHILDREN'S PROGRAM)

Position Summary

The Support Worker provides assistance to individuals so they can maintain a quality of life based on their needs while ensuring overall care, health, welfare, safety and happiness of every child being supported.

Location: Niagara Falls, ON

Rate of Pay (CAD): 24.20/hour

Department: Regional Respite Program

Position Type: Replacement

Accountability

This position reports directly to the Supervisor, Children’s Services

Hours of Work: Shift work and weekends are required

Corporate Responsibilities

  • Fosters positive and constructive interpersonal relationships with the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and clients, visitors, outside agencies, government officials and related professional associations.
  • Maintains and adheres to all relevant legislation.
  • Maintains and adheres to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Abides by all Occupational Health and Safety Policies.
  • Demonstrates practices which are consistent with the guiding principles of the Agency

Job Responsibilities

Supports to Individuals

  • Supervise and support the individuals in such areas as recreation and leisure activities.
  • Supervises and supports individuals in the development of life and social skills, such as personal hygiene, nutrition, outings, etc., as they may require.
  • Provides emotional support for each individual as needed.
  • Administers medication and ensures proper storage of medication to ensure safety.
  • Tasks may include general household cleaning and minor home maintenance.
  • Preparation of nutritious meals, as according to Canada’s Food Guide.

Administration and Finance

  • Writes reports or assists with assessments, including data collection.
  • Ensures information is handled in compliance with confidentiality guidelines of the agency and the Ministry of Community and Social Services.
  • May be responsible for arranging funds for outings and handling petty cash.

Training and Professional Development

  • Updates skills regularly as required.
  • Attends conferences, trainings, and staff meetings as required.

Health & Safety

  • Follow agency policies, rules and regulations regarding health and safety, housekeeping, safety, security, and equipment.
  • Immediately report any workplace accidents/incidents to the supervisor/designate and complete the required paperwork.
  • Immediately report any problems or hazards and/or unsafe work conditions.
  • Personally conduct yourself in a manner that promotes safe conditions and actions.

Qualifications

  • Related college diploma (DSS or DSW, EA-SNS, Social Service Worker, Child & Youth Worker) or post-secondary equivalent.
  • Minimum of six (6) months experience working with children with special needs.
  • Behavior management training an asset.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of both official languages an asset.
  • Current Standard First Aid Certification and CPR (or willingness to obtain).
  • Current Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training - NVCI (or willingness to obtain).
  • Valid class G driver’s license (willing to use own vehicle).
  • Proven ability to work as a team member, as well as independently.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Persons Screening Check.
